Excerpt:

"What are your plans for Christmas, Mr. Scrooge?" I ask.

“Not much,” Adam says. He turns toward the center stage. The high school band has started playing again, the tune of a wonky “All I Want for Christmas” belting out across the fair.

“Will you be here? In town?”

“I haven’t decided yet.”

“Okay,” I say. I still don’t quite know what happened to his parents after everything, and there’s no easy way to ask. “Let me know if you are, so I know if I should get you your own snow globe.”

He groans. “Holly, don’t you dare.”

“I saw the way you were staring at the ones back there. There was lust in your eyes. Pure, unadulterated desire.”

“Lust,” he repeats, looking down at me. “No, there certainly wasn’t.”

“Yes,” I murmur. “You want to celebrate Christmas, deep down.”

“No,” he says, just as quietly. “I really don’t.”

My throat feels dry. His eyes are dark brown and steady and I want to get to know him. Everything about him is interesting to me. Adam Dunbar, the enigma I never got to solve.

Maybe he’ll let me this time around.
