Writing 1 2 3

It’s oversimplified to say that writing is as easy as 1, 2, 3, but I would like to offer three tips to help with your writing. First, this may seem elementary, but it’s truly important that you write something you are interested in. A good topic you’re not enthused about will not typically sustain your interest enough to complete.

Second, don’t allow writing to become something that you dread. There may be days when you are not looking forward to the process. There will be days when you don’t feel like writing and you have to push through, but don’t allow that to take away from the joy of it for you. One way of preventing this, is to associate writing with the goal you began with, and not the daily process.

Third, and I stress this a lot, keep in mind that it will not be perfect the first time you write that paragraph. Good writing takes time, and plenty of editing, but over time something else will also happen. Your words, sentences, paragraphs, and chapters will not only start to become easier to write, they will continue to improve. My rough draft from a book yesterday is still a rough draft, yet it’s a better rough draft than one from five years ago.

Give yourself the time and enjoyment of writing, without adding mental barriers to it. There will be enough challenges without allowing your brain to add to them. When you follow these simple tips, it won’t necessarily be as easy as 1,2,3, but it will add up to something that will better your day, life, and the lives of your reade
