PSA: Custom Cash Bonus Isn’t Related to Other Citi ThankYou Bonuses

I just finished updating my guide to Citi’s Bonus Eligibility Rules and realized that it’s not very well publicized that you are actually eligible for a bonus on a new Citi Custom Cash card (the card that earns 5% on you top spend category each month), even if you have received a bonus on a Citi Premier, Citi Prestige, or Rewards+ card within the last 24 months.

To clarify, if you were to open a Citi Premier or Rewards+, you would see this message:

Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you received a new cardmember bonus for Citi Rewards+℠, Citi ThankYou® Preferred, Citi ThankYou®Premier/Citi Premier℠ or Citi Prestige®, or if you have closed any of these accounts, in the past 24 months.

When the Citi Custom Cash launched, my assumption was that it would be lumped in to these same rules.

After all, while it’s billed as a cash back card, it earns ThankYou points the same way as a Rewards+, meaning that it earns ThankYou points worth a penny each – but can be combined with your Citi Premier or Citi Prestige card to “unlock” full ThankYou point transferability to partners (also see best ways to use Citi ThankYou points / the Citi Trifecta) including the limited time ability to transfer ThankYou points to American Airlines.

But it turned out not to be the case.

The Citi Custom Cash follows its own 48 month criteria:

This offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back. Citi will only issue one Citi Custom CashSMCard account per person. You will qualify for the bonus offer only if you have not received a bonus offer for opening a new Citi Custom CashSMCard in the past 48 months.

So, even if you recently got a Citi Premier 80,000 point bonus (get that offer), you can still supplement that bonus with the 20,000 point offer on a new Custom Cash card.
