3 Mistakes Authors Make with Their Websites

3 Mistakes Authors Make with Their Websites:

1. Lackluster, unprofessional, and lazy visual design. I know you aren’t supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I hate to break this to you, but people do anyway. If your website doesn’t look nice, visitors will click away no matter how awesome your content may be.

2. Messy, frustrating, and confusing navigation. Make it easy for your visitors to find what they want, especially if you mentioned it in your book! I’ve lost count of how many times a book referred me to a website and I had to search and search and *search* for the promised information.

3. Focusing on themselves rather than on their readers. There is a delicate balance to creating copy for an author website that gives readers what they want while showcasing the author. Alas, too many authors shine too much of the spotlight on themselves. And, if they don’t do that, they don’t shine the light on themselves at all, which doesn’t work either.

Fix these three things and you’ll see a marked improvement in your website’s conversions both in growing your email list and in book sales.
