ALL THE GOOD THAT’S FIT TO PRINT
YESTERDAY I posted on the dark side, so today, in the spirit of “Koyaanisqatsi” I want to restore balance by posting on the lighter, even brighter side. An odd adjective pair? Well, one of the weights on the other side of the balance from dark is light comedy. Aristotle supposedly defined comedy as an imitation of men worse than the average (where tragedy was an imitation of men better than the average) — (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedy). Ha, ha! But I’m not talking satire, parody or political innuendo here. I’m talking smile-and-laughter-provoking. Nothing diminishes the impact of darkness like an authentic, hearty laugh.
So why “brighter?” I am particularly fond of the moral exemplum about a room so dark it’s pitch black — you know, moonless one a.m. sky dark — and yet lighting a single match…well, you get the idea: No matter how dark, a single, tiny point of light will break its power. Just brighter; doesn’t have to be brightest.
I’ve been asked several times if THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor is a dystopian or utopian sci-fu (science-based futuring) novel. Well, yes, it’s dystopian to some extent, but like all forms of darkness, a single comic insertion, a bright point of lightness, a solar shower, any of these which are present forcefully limit, even dispel that darkness. A utopian novel? Not that either, but something realistically in-between where life is lived to it’s fullest and futures are cast. Tired of dark darkness? Try the Amazon Genre Bestseller, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859) in printed, digital or audiobook form.
A lot like “The STATIC Movie” (Honolulu) in which I play “Will Gardner,” a curmugeonous veteran forced to face the challenge of Alzheimer’s disease. Dark? Well, who in their right mind would invite such a hopeless challenge? Yet, it’s not about the end, it’s about the journey. Will struggles, and ultimately wins in his own brilliant way, while conveying not just frustration and anger, but love and affection to his friends, family and caretakers trying to help as best they can. Tired of dark darkness? Join me for the 25 Sept 2021 premiere at 7 p.m. on Hawaii’s KHON2, KHII or CW (https://kspllc.media/the-static-movie or follow me throughout the filming at https://janik.yolasite.com/actor.php).
