Aspects of Thinking.
Something we do every day is thinking, but how good are we at it? In actual fact while natural IQ can be tested, it is not fixed and how we think can be greatly improved by learning how to think more effectively. Part of that improvement can be memory. Knowing what to do can super charge your ability of recall in order of what ever you like. The key to remembering is imagination, association and action. Like all things, some effort must be put into forming a chain of thought but it can be really fun and the feeling of accomplishment is a fantastic feeling. If you usually make a shopping list for groceries, why not before starting to shop, look over the list and link each item to the next. You can do this by classification and categorising, a process whereby in your mind’s eye you associate the items by the most unusual connection possible and according to size, number and action. It is important to see in your mind, an actual picture of the associated item. You may be surprised at the end of the shopping, how many items you have successfully remembered. Of course do not forget to check your shopping list, and be aware that if you have left off an item it may have been because the picture was too mundane.
One of the innovators on how to think was Edward De Bono. He made lateral thinking popular and highlighted the idea of organized thinking as a group activity, wherein the chair person would swap different coloured hats to indicate different aspects of a subject. People then would limit their ideas in a more organised way, leading to a more efficient result.
Another thought system is that of brainstorming, where free unlimited ideas are put forward from a group of people and written down so to inspire fresh perspective on any given subject.
Throughout history thinking has intrigued and one interesting thought experiment was used to split a group of students in half, one group before a test were encouraged and praised while the other half were told the test was standard and far above their capability. It may be no surprise that the result for the undervalued group was significantly less than the group that was encouraged.
Thinking is one of the activities that can be positively improved with learning and applying that new knowledge to how we go about thinking can determine how well we do.
