How Witchcraft Played a Role in Shaping Race Relations in America

Many people despise me because they think that I am a witch. I try and tell them that I am a mystic, but they place all of us in the same category. And god forbid if something bad happens to me, they think that I’ve been cursed. Then they start preaching, if you weren’t into that witchcraft, you wouldn’t be suffering. Or see, that’s what you get, messing around with the devil. Then, they try and persuade me to go to the other side, to find the Lord, to ask for forgiveness for believing in false gods and idols. And then, I have to ask them, where in the hell was the Lord when people were being lynched, shot, imprisoned, or dragged across the Atlantic Ocean? Where was the Lord when actual laws were created that made black people less than human? Where was the Lord when segregation Jim Crow broke down the spirit and souls of black people? People who believe in the Lord, fail to understand that they are the ones who are cursed, and witches like me, are fighting tooth and nail to cure them.

Lovecraft Country explained

I normally don’t like to talk about racism, mostly because it gets me fired up. And now you’re probably asking, racism? You were just talking about the Lord. Well, yes, it’s like I said, racism. Many people come after racist institutions and even people. Yet, there is this multi-billion dollar business, called religion that always gets a free pass. And nobody calls them out, because the zealots who drank the kool-aid can’t tell the difference between a con man and a spiritual leader. Let’s be real here, many religious organizations sold their soul to the devil, and played a pivotal role in not only putting black people in chains, but also robbing people of color of their languages, cultures, and religions. People are brainwashed and believe that praying, singing, getting down on their knees and begging a Lord that put them in chains, will save them. Now, before I go any further, it must be stated that I don’t think that ALL religions are bad. Besides, I don’t want you all to curse me out in the comment section. However, I do believe that religions need to take accountability for the part that they played in promoting racism across the globe. And after watching Lovecraft Country, I don’t believe that I am the only one who feels this way. Besides, my witchy radar is strong and if I was going to try and decode some of the themes, I would say that the show is sending a compelling message of rediscovery and self-empowerment through black magick.

Lovecraft country and Jordan Peele

Afterall, we all got voodoo in our blood, whether we like it or not. Our ancestors believed in primordial gods, were more aligned with nature, and practiced magic, which people call witchcraft today. Witchcraft is highly misunderstood, feared, and has devolved into a taboo. People are afraid to even talk about it, for fear of punishment or worse banishment. Besides, no one wants to risk being the weird voodoo lady. Yet, writers have figured out sneaky ways to send subliminal messages, reminding you of the gods and the traditions of our past. Just take a look at H.P. Lovecraft, he was a racist and made it clear that he hated niggers. Yet, Jordan Peele applied his mastery to his stories, bringing them to life in such a way, where blacks suffered but also thrived. The message? Black people are the ultimate alchemist. We can overcome virtually any situation, can flip things around, turning things that are inherently negative into something that is potently powerful. But sadly, many of us have lost our mojo. Or, we are so brainwashed that we can’t see this power within us. But the characters of Lovecraft Country are constantly reminding us of this lost power. We see this with, Leticia, also known as Letty, Atticus, who goes by the name of Tic, and Uncle George who travel across the dirty south and racist north to collect information for his Negro Guide Book.

Lovecraft country characters

All of these characters go through hell in back to get to Lovecraft country to rescue Montrose. They face their own monsters, Sheriffs of sundown counties that threaten to tie a noose around their necks and hang them from trees, monsters with several eyes that suck blood, and the dysfunction of families torn about by disparity and bigotry. There was one scene where the characters sped through a racist town, only to cross the county line to be confronted by the police of a neighboring town. Devon County was a place that didn’t just lynch black people, they also burned witches. These scenes were deeply disturbing, but watching them, I couldn’t help but understand how fear plays a huge role in racism. The concept of fear wasn’t something that was prevalent in many African and Native American religions and belief systems. People weren’t afraid of dying. In fact, they accepted death as a natural part of life. Yet, some religions made death a scary thing. Instead of you, joining the ancestors in the afterlife. You slipped into the fiery pits of hell and was forced to burn for all eternity. Yet, this wasn’t everyone’s fate, only people who were considered evil. And since witches are the epitome of evil, well, you see where I am getting at. Racism thrives on fear, not just fear of the unknown, but also fear of you understanding the power of your ancestral lines.

Lovecraft country plot

Let’s take a look at Tic, he was a descendent of a powerful occultist and thus his blood was needed to make Samuel Braithwaites, immortal. These occultists didn’t care about killing Tic. They just needed his blood to perform their rituals. Just like many of these religious organizations don’t really care about you. They don’t need your blood, yet they need you to believe. Belief is a currency in the magical world. And whenever you subscribe to a particular religion, you are giving them your blood, your money, your ashé, and your power. And in turn, their turning you into their slave. They keep you blind, and ignorant, much like a master forbidding his slave from reading. Then, they perform their own witchcraft, ensnaring you into a spell that you can never escape from. A spell that cripples you, makes you less than human, and makes you afraid of the very thing that will free you, good old fashion witchcraft. I go into a huge rant about this in my other video, using Voodoo Symbols to get sh•t done. In it, I talked about how the true revolutionist were voodoo practitioners and priests, fighting for freedom. Yet, it seems that people aren’t ready for that quite yet. So, instead, we need tip toe around and ease you into the witchcraft and sorcery. Afterall, you did suffer from hundreds of years of indoctrination, and your default mode is to reject anything that is foreign or scary.

Do I think that all religions are inherently evil? No, I think that a lot of the spiritual principles from these religions were hijacked by elitist like the fictional character Samuel Braithwaite. They then used religions, as a means to control the general population. Control, is an ego driven behavior that ensures that certain people will always have a seat at the dinner table. While others will have to clean up and just eat the crumbs. In Love Craft Country, the Braithwaites wanted immortality. In truth, they wanted to ensure that their family would thrive and prosper for all eternity. And they used their magic to trick nature, bending it to their will. And it's clear that they’ve been very successful. Why? Well because blacks are the people of earth, the embodiment of nature, and we have been subjected to this trickery and deceit for hundreds of years. And that’s really what witchcraft is my friends. It’s an illusion, an entrapment of the mind, with constant reinforcements to remind you that you are inferior. Overtime, you succumb to your master’s will, and start to believe the narrative that he created for you. This ensures his dominance and since you’re cut off from nature and are afraid of voodoo, you don’t have the power or the resources to break the spell. I say all this because if the United States truly wants to heal. The US is going to have to get all of its skeletons out of the closet. Some religions are going to need to address the demonization of hundreds of gods, deities, orishas, loa, and the destruction of thousands of indigenous cultures from all over the world. Furthermore, we as a people need to separate the politics from the religion. We need to understand that there are some aspects of religion, designed to control, and others that were created to inspire.
