The "Dead" Cat

The wind is howling outside. I cannot see the barn in the falling darkness, as the snow is sheeting sideways, almost perpendicular. The bare trees are shaking and swaying, making me wait for the tell-tale crack of broken limbs. In short, a day (and now, a night) to sit inside, and pray the power doesn't go off while I contemplate the next story. There is also the bonus presence of the "Dead" cat, Jess, close by.
Jess sleeps as if she was walking along and someone shot her with a tranquilizer dart. She slumps to one side, head sideways, paws slightly outflung, body limp. In short, she looks dead. Its so convincing that I often have to nudge her awake, because I'm afraid she really did die in her sleep. But as she chooses to "die" in the chair, in the cat bed, or on in front of the fire, I usually assume she's still alive. "Are you dead, Jess?" I ask morbidly, as I walk by. Sometimes, if she is deeply asleep, she won't answer; 14yrs has made her hard of hearing. Then I have to go over and pet her, saying "Jess? Jess!"
Usually, she'll wake up with a questioning purr, and I'll pet her. But sometimes, she just purrs very slightly, because its too much trouble to move. She's too happy and comfortable.
May you all be as happy and comfortable as "Dead" cats on this dark night. :)

John Steiner And, yes, cats do everything on their own terms even die as they choose.

message 2: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall Do you have a cat, John (live or "dead")? "Dead" one is on my lap right now :)

message 3: by John (new)

John Steiner Taking care of my father's cat while he's at my sister's until he recovers. Sniffles [I named her after she came home from the shelter with a cold that lasted three days] is a bit needy on affection, and a mostly indoor cat on her own choosing. But otherwise she fits the bill of what cats are like.

I work off the Peter Ustinov theory of cats in the movie, "Logan's Run." Each cat has three names; their ordinary name, their fancy name and the third name we talking apes will never discover, but the cat itself knows.

Jenny Twist My cat is usually alive, but my dog is frequently 'dead' and I regularly panic.
My cat is called Geri, known as Princess, Miss Silky and Pusskin Pooh. We think her secret name is something like Princess Nefertiti, Slayer in the Night

Tara Hall John, your Sniffles sounds just like Jess, who is again on my lap as I write this. Does she also commandeer your lap when you're writing? :)
Your policy on cats names sounds like TS Eliots, of the Broadway play "Cats" fame. :)

message 6: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall Jenny, Please give Princess Geri a hug for me, and tell her she is fab!

Jess doesn't have a secret name, but Cavity's real name is Macavity, named for the archfiend in the aforementioned musical, Cats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFPKbg...

message 7: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Twist McCavity is one of my two favourite Cat names, the other being Schrodinger

message 8: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall I will tell to Macavity - he is sure to be very pleased! He loves attention :)

message 9: by John (new)

John Steiner Sniffles will often hop onto my table and park herself between my forearms as I write.

Schrodinger is a hilarious name for a cat, particularly if that that is both dead and alive at the same time.

message 10: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall I have the same trouble LOL! Give Sniffles a hug from me, John :) Schrodinger IS hilarious!

Oh wow! As a cat lover, I'm so ashamed of myself for forgetting that scene! Thank you so much for reminding me.
Cats! When will we ever learn that we are totally subservient to them, never the other way around?

message 12: by Lynette (new)

Lynette Sofras And, Oh Tara,
Much as I appreciate your concern, don't you know that breaking a cat's dream is really not the done thing? Miaow =^.^=
PS - I forgot to tell you, my first cat was called Tara - a very mystical cat indeed!

message 13: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall Hey! I love that cat face! That is so cool!
I try not to break up Jess's dreams. But once in a while I just have to check...

you have good taste in names, Lyn :)

message 15: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall That is so cool! Now I have to go email someone just so I can do that next to my name! LOL

It's not that I love cats specifically. I see myself as more wolf than man, but I can get along with other animals generally. The thing with cats is you can never own one. In a dysfunctional relationship the cat owns you, but you'll never own the cat. It's best to see it as a roommate with whom you are in a semi-constant state of psychological warfare intermittently broken up by truces, cease-fires and armistices.

Jenny Twist Dogs have owners. Cats have staff. (Wolves are free spirits)

You describe the cat-human relationship perfectly, John...or is that PURRFECTLY? :)

message 19: by Tara (new)

Tara Hall You are so right, Jenny :) In fact, my "Master" is in the kitchen right now complaining that he isn't getting his milk fast enough.

I'm coming already, Cavity!!! Stop Yowling!
