Excerpt

I woke at dusk, to men shouting. Flames were flickering in torches on the wall.

I ran toward the noise, coming face to face with Cerdan, in all his armor. “You bastard,” he said, baring his fangs and pointing his sword at me. “You have much to answer for.”

I didn’t reply, just braced for attack.

He circled me. “Hunters have attacked all over France. Easily a hundred werewolves are dead, and as many humans. Cannibal is missing, and presumed dead. Veronique is safe, but some of my best men are dead.”

“Leave now, or you will die, too.”

Cerdan lunged for me, and I evaded him, grabbing up a sword. He parried my thrust, then attacked in earnest. I defended myself, but he was older, and faster. He spitted me on the end of his sword in a few moments. With a shove, he pinned me to the oak door of the rectory. “I’ll bring your upper half back to James, so he can know you were faithful to death,” he said with an evil laugh, drawing his dagger. “A small comfort, to be sure.”

As he went to cut me, a dozen red furry forms launched at him, biting ferociously. He cut them to pieces, littering the ground with dying foxes as the bites rapidly healed up. But as he turned to deliver my killing blow, an arrow burst through his neck, the bloody head appearing under his chin. He staggered, but didn’t go down.

Charlise appeared, a bow in her hand. She stepped in front of me, and put another arrow through Cerdan’s right eye, then his left one. He cursed her, blinded, trying to pull them out. She turned to me and tugged at the end of the sword, freeing it. “Kill him,” she said, giving me the sword.

Amidst new obstacles and relationship problems, Sarelle has to decide where her future lies.

A Good Year

There's No Heaven....Like Hell

Faced with losing Pandora Productions as well as her best friend Rebecca to the smarmy Paul, savvy film executive Debbie makes a pact with the demon Shaker, agreeing to bind herself to him as his human master in return for killing Paul. When the intended coup goes amiss, resulting in the deaths of both Rebecca and Paul, Debbie finds herself alone at Pandoraís helm, facing a rising tide of corporate enemies led by Paulís duplicitous son Dante and the behemoth Titan Pictures. Shakerís backing smoothes the way, solving some problems supernaturally, others through brutal bloodshed, even as he calls into play various preternatural and human allies to assist Debbie.

As the months pass, Debbieís strong resolve begins to crumble under the weight of her actions, even as she guiltily concedes the pleasure she finds in Shakerís arms is becoming something more than just affection. Is there hope for a happy ending built on so much evil? Or is Debbie doomed to lose her heart as well as her soul to a demon who has only been waiting for the chance to claim both?

It takes talent on the part of an author to get me rooting for someone who's decidedly not a 'good person'. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would recommend to anyone who likes something a little different in the way of paranormal romance and would enjoy a more mature heroine. Five Stars.

Of Hot Air Balloons and Heart’s Desires

Of Hot Air Balloons and Heart’s Desires

Summer is here, and I look forward to a new joy this year: seeing my late father’s pride and joy, Pegasus, fly the skies again.

When my father passed away last year, I sold his custom hot air balloon to help pay for his final arrangements. My father hadn’t flown her in close to 20 years, and I was overjoyed to finally see her aloft again in pictures and video of balloon rallies last fall.

Pegasus is a custom made hot air balloon featuring a black Pegasus with silver wings and horn centered on a full blue moon on a purple background flecked with red and silver stars. She flies solid black pennants, with the slogan “Once in a Blue Moon” at the very bottom. Her striking red eyes and black coat were my touch as a child, as I helped my father design the balloon. Pegasus represented his proudest accomplishment of becoming a hot air balloon pilot, which took him many years of study, sandwiched in on evenings and weekends when he wasn’t working hard on overhead door work. I believe that my father’s happiest memories came from flying her, his most favorite thing in the world…and why he couldn’t bring himself to sell her, when he grew too ill to fly. My dad couldn’t bear to let another pilot take custody of his dream. It’s hard to let go of your heart’s desire, even when you know its time. But dreams held too long slowly become weights that hold you back from new dreams. You can’t move forward standing still…or fly, when you are trapped on the ground.

Pegasus has a new owner that loves her very much⎯I daresay as much as my dad⎯, and deserves more time in the sun, being admired amidst the clouds. She is part of someone else’s dreams now, with a beautiful future stretching out before her like the endless blue sky. It fills my heart with happiness to see her aloft once more, galloping fast among the clouds.

Cherish your past, and live your dreams as much as you can, every day. And when its time, let them go gently, drifting on the wind.

Goodbyes Don't Last Forever

Most animal lovers are acquainted with numerous animal nonfiction which pulls at the heartstrings. In general, this follows a formula: introduce human (usually in some kind of crises, real or imagined), then introduce animal (also usually traumatized or at minimum without a home), who teaches human about themselves so that the two grow together to become a happy, healthy, and productive unit until animal passes on. This is not that story. This is the short epilogue that happened after.

At 18 ½ years, my black cat Cavity had many health problems; kidney failure in addition to an overactive thyroid, which he’d endured the last 5 years. A shadow of his former “bulky” self, Cavity still really enjoyed his time here until the very last day when he lost the use of his back legs. After he left this world with the assistance of our vet, we buried his remains, and grieved most of the winter.

I knew he would be leaving us for some time, and I often asked him to come back, if he could, to let me know he was okay. This wasn’t something unusual, I ask all my fellow creatures this, human or animal. Almost none have come back, and even then, its usually just once, possibly to cut the last tie to their old life before beginning their new one as energy. I think the barrier is hard for them to cross, especially as most animals are at peace after death; they’re content to wait for you until its your time to arrive, so see no need to come back. But Cavity did.

My dream began as a normal one: I was helping family clean out a junk-filled apartment for some people who’d left (something I’ve done many times). It was depressing and sad to box up pieces of someone’s life for disposal (and the trash was disgusting), so I filled a box and took it downstairs to the curb. There, lying stretched out on the porch above the stairs directly in my way, was a pure white cat. Another one sat upright behind him. Worried they were strays, I set the box down and called out to them “kitten?” The white cat looked up, and suddenly the odd familiarity with how he was lying made sense; this was Cavity, now pure white instead of black.

In hindsight, I believe the cat with Cavity was Jess, his brother who died a year previous. All my attention was for Cavity, and all his for me, as he scrambled to his feet and into my open arms, his loud throaty purr an unstoppable engine. I choked out some nonsense asking where had he been, my one thought that I hadn’t realized how much I had missed him until he was in my arms again. The dream immediately began to fade, and with it, our connection. I hugged him tighter, and told him he was my good cat, and how glad I was he’d come back to see me. Then it was over, and I opened my eyes, awake.*

I awoke crying, and have been crying as I write this. Yes, I am sad that I live in a world that no longer has Cavity in it. But they are happy tears of relief, too. Cavity is not just okay, he’s doing well; along with his new fur, he’s regained his health, and his body has the grace and power of his youth. That soul that touched mine for so many years is intact, and at peace. He simply came back because he knew I needed him. This is just a temporary parting, because I have work to do here in this life before I pass to the next. I am very grateful for him coming back, and his reminder that our goodbyes are not forever. When its time for me to cross, Cavity will be there waiting to welcome me with his throaty purr again.

Deep Breaths Tales of Hope and Inspiration by Tara Fox HallDeep Breaths: Tales of Hope and Inspiration

*Yes, some will dismiss this as a dream. I will argue that a simple dream feels like a dream; wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, you’re by yourself, there’s no connection with anyone else within the dream. The easiest comparison is the difference between interacting with a stuffed toy cat and a living cat. The toy is inanimate matter; the living cat is THERE, reacting to you, its own being with its own complete life and way of looking at the world.

Continuity in a Series

Continuity in a Series

Writing a series is in a sense easier than writing stand alone books. The author can start a new book where they left off in the previous book. The longer the series goes on, the better the creator gets to know their characters, and how they’ll act, making what happens next easier to decide on. Yet this building up of knowledge and events is a double-edged sword, as the more past there is to draw on, the more the creator has to remember correctly.

Some series get past this by evolving super slowly, or not evolving at all. Remember Sweet Valley High? Those blonde twins were in high school for many, many books. Time almost didn’t seem to pass, and past references were few and far between. Other series take a particular place instead of a couple, and focus on the different characters living there, so that major events are referenced, but many minor ones specific to certain families or couples don’t have to factor into sequels. Therein is the hardest part of writing a series: the author needs to address the events that happened before in previous books. While that isn’t hard when starting book two, an author starting book number fifteen will have to do a significant amount of research to make sure that their characters are true to form and previous history.

Another necessary aspect of continuity is addressing the passage of time. In reality, humans change as they go through life as a direct result of events they weather and celebrate, experiences they accumulate. Good people can become bitter, and villains can become heroes. Settings change with development and decay; stores and landmarks there one decade can be gone the next. Friends that we are close to when we are young are often not in our list of friends when we’re adults. Change is inevitable as we grow and mature, get jobs, get married, or grow apart in values and ideals.

Lastly, there is series progression. Usually, each book has a few specific conflicts that are resolved by the book’s end, be it a couple getting back together, a murder being solved, a villain getting his just deserts, etc. Readers want to see a series evolve, for things to change for the better (unless it’s a horror series, lol). A really great series has multi-book arcs that go through lots of twists and turns before their conclusion. A spectacular chain of novels has this plus a great arc that runs through the entire series.

I’ve tried for continuity in both my Promise Me and Lash series, checking again and again for date/event errors, a solid progression of character evolvement and believability, and many story arcs within each book and throughout several books. Do I have a great arc in mind? Yes, I’m working on it!
