English Language Learners (ELL) Guide to Success

As someone who had to learn English in school, I've always felt a special affinity for ELL students. I've created this 12-minute video that shares some of my best tips for ELL student success. I know that some students will not understand everything I say, and that's okay – this video is meant as much for the educators as it is for the students. My assumption of course is that ELL students can achieve at incredibly high levels.

Tatiana Oh, but you had the unfair advantage of walking through the desert, living in a refugee camp, and all that other cool stuff! (That's not a sentence I ever thought I'd say, wow.) For some reason, I love that you and your brother were such troublemakers when you were kids, then grew into such strong, positive role-models. There are images and ideas from your book that I think of all the time still, like the idea of a young person growing up and "growing a heart". I love the things your dad taught you like giving more than you have to, working hard, sharing what you have and helping those around you. He was truly a great person! I say that with tears in my eyes as I feel like he's been a big influence on me, through your book. Anyway, I didn't mean to get all gushy, but your book has stuck with me for years now.

Baratunde's was great too! I love how funny it is, and good-natured, and hopeful about the future. I'm really glad you told him to write it.
