It’s Great to Be Alive By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I am thinking about summer. I can’t wait to go to the beach and collect shells, inhale the sea salty spray, and let the surf dance on my toes.

By and large, I’ve been a person in seclusion for a long time.  2019 going into Feb. 2020 was the year and some of breast cancer. I had a lot of chemotherapy and then immunotherapy (which for some weird reason also made me sick) and a surgery to remove the breast. Unfortunately, I got two bad infections in the surgerical site which meant more medication that made me ill. Then another surgery to clear out the infection that the medicine couldn’t reach.

During all that time, I edited the best I could and worked with my editor. I wrote. When my mind was too tired, I colored which is very restful for an adult to do. It also helps relieve stress.

One thing I was not aware of was that the medications compromised my immune system, so for much of my treatment I could not see my grandkids or go to church. I had to avoid small children and crowds.

Of course, the universe is hilarious. A week after I ended the chemo/immunotherapy (mid February 2020), the pandemic was announced. So again I’m in seclusion and can’t go to church and must avoid small children and crowds.

I miss all the hugging. But I’m alive and it’s great to be alive!

So…what am I doing? I’m editing and writing. I’m eating takeout when I can to support my local restaurants. I buy things online. I love Alex and Ani stuff. I read and watch tv.
And I patiently wait.

By summertime, I hope to have gotten the vaccine. I will still wear a mask for a while. I will walk more in the sunshine.  I will chase grandchildren again!

My summer by the sea will happen! I believe!
