Dream Writing Exercise #1

Every fiction book I write comes from a dream. How do I do it? Dreaming is as much a science as it is an art. You can inspire yourself. Choose a photo of a place you would like to go to. Place a notebook and pen on your nightstand. As you lay down to sleep, make a request to see that place. Go to sleep.

The next morning before you do anything else, sit up in bed and write down your dream. Write feelings, impression, colors, sounds, if you started in one place and went to another. If you visited the place you wanted to see, write down everything about it. Were you alone? Were there others? Who did you meet? What did you do there?

Some people draw their dream instead. That works too. Just write down everything you experienced. Some people verbally record their remembrances of their dream.

If you used a photo, be sure to paste or tape it in the notebook. If you are recording, say that I started by looking at a photo about this and describe it.

When you have recorded everything you can remember, now start your day. It is important that you stay in bed. Once you step out, you have entered this world again. As we focus more on this life, dreams might fade.

When you have practiced this long enough, your memories of dreams will be more detailed and remain with you longer.

Happy Dreaming!
