Me: *puts on mittens for the first time since last winter* Oh gross, why is there a nasty brown spot on my mitten?
Me: *buys a coffee on the way to work*
Coffee lid: *immediately leaks all over my mitten as I walk*
Me: Oh yeah, that’s why
This seems like something from years past. Relatable, but not anymore. Going to work. Visiting a coffee shop.
Unfortunately, it’s all too current. My museum closed for three full months, but then it reopened again - well before any of us felt it was time, or safe. Happily (in one sense, at least… ) visitation has dropped to incredibly low numbers since schools reopened and cases started spiking again, which makes for very dull, if slightly less risky days, but yeah. The little café is a struggling independent café/ice cream shop whose business has been hit hard by being new in the first place, and also by winter very suddenly having arrived on the prairies, at least for now. And it’s right on my way to work, so: yes to going to work (for me), masks in the café, which I don’t so much “visit” as “hastily obtain a coffee and then leave again”, mittens on my hands because it’s f*cking cold now, all of a sudden. Boo. I’d definitely rather be working from home, where I have plenty to do, don’t need to wear a mask all day, have very little exposure to other, potentially germy humans, and yeah. Yeah.
