Without being able to refuel, this was their safest bet—although it was not without risk. Absent constant thrust from the engine, it would be a long, slow trip; it would tax their food and air supply and expose them to the constant radiation environment of deep space. This did not seem like a bargain to Cal: lose the mission and get cancer.”
