Why did the Sii-marian Serpent swallow a rock?

I was furiously working on Omo, when I wrote this about Professor Bianoor. (The expert in animal care that shows up in Circle of Seven, The Spellborn and the Dragons and the soon to be released, Omo.)

“Curses on the wizard and his beasts,” King Farrimond roared. “They are no concern of ours. I refuse to listen to this foolishness.”

A stubborn look crossed Professor Bianoor’s face.

“Beasts in need call to me—” he started.

“Bah,” King Farrimond interrupted. “You have plenty of beasts here that need your care.”

“Besides,” Queen Alina protested. “It would be dangerous and you are young. And you have a much better chance at finding a wife here in the capitol.”

“Dangerous,” Bianoor shouted. “Did I fear danger when I stitched up the foot of a mountain lion three times my length? Or when I climbed down the mouth of a Sii-marian serpent when it was choking on a rock? I don’t want a wife and you have no need of my expertise. I am going!”

I kept writing, but one question stuck in my head. Why would a serpent be choking on a rock? I had just put that in as a placeholder until I came up with some really interesting danger for Professor Bianoor, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Then, without warning, the story popped into my head and Bianoor the Brave and the Singing Serpents of Sii-mar was born.

As soon as I had the rough draft of Omo finished, I jumped into writing Bianoor. I am thrilled with how it is turning out and can't wait to share!
