Why did the Sii-marian Serpent swallow a rock?

I was furiously working on Omo, when I wrote this about Professor Bianoor. (The expert in animal care that shows up in Circle of Seven, The Spellborn and the Dragons and the soon to be released, Omo.)

“Curses on the wizard and his beasts,” King Farrimond roared. “They are no concern of ours. I refuse to listen to this foolishness.”

A stubborn look crossed Professor Bianoor’s face.

“Beasts in need call to me—” he started.

“Bah,” King Farrimond interrupted. “You have plenty of beasts here that need your care.”

“Besides,” Queen Alina protested. “It would be dangerous and you are young. And you have a much better chance at finding a wife here in the capitol.”

“Dangerous,” Bianoor shouted. “Did I fear danger when I stitched up the foot of a mountain lion three times my length? Or when I climbed down the mouth of a Sii-marian serpent when it was choking on a rock? I don’t want a wife and you have no need of my expertise. I am going!”

I kept writing, but one question stuck in my head. Why would a serpent be choking on a rock? I had just put that in as a placeholder until I came up with some really interesting danger for Professor Bianoor, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Then, without warning, the story popped into my head and Bianoor the Brave and the Singing Serpents of Sii-mar was born.

As soon as I had the rough draft of Omo finished, I jumped into writing Bianoor. I am thrilled with how it is turning out and can't wait to share!

Baby Dragons!

When I sent out a call for baby dragon names to my email list, I didn’t know what I was getting in to! So many awesome names! So many things I had not even considered! Like what color are they, their lineage, and so on. I needed a little time to think about all of this, and a little more time to think how to work it all into the story. Originally, the babies only show up a few times in a generic way. They will be showing up in later books, but after seeing all the questions, I wanted to add a little bit more, if I can make it make sense to the story.
Because of all the questions, I am going to give a little bit more information and delay choosing the names until September 15th.
Here’s the info I have:
Father – Sylamar, color –red, age – 251 years old, hatched inside the barrier, injuries from the ichneumon – was blinded from venom shot into his face
Mother - Hessamyn, color – green – 183 years old, hatched inside the barrier – injuries from the ichneumon – injuries were extensive, but they don’t really come into the story other than the fact that she was badly injured and took a long time to heal
Dragonlings
Three females – colors - blue, yellow and green
Two males – colors – red and brown.

You can read about these babies in The Seer, which should release around September 30.

Dragon Name Day

We had a lot of fun with finding names for the dragonlings. I had so many questions and 129 names submitted!

I decided to add a chapter to The Seer about the naming.

Click on the link below to get a sneak peek of Chapter 70, the naming of the dragons.

(This is not a final copy so you may see some typos! 🙂)

The Seer is on schedule to release on October 15! So excited about this second book!

The Seer and the Scribe is finished!

To celebrate finishing The Seer and the Scribe, I took a very last minute trip to one of Oklahoma’s great state parks with my daughter and fellow author, A. G. Marshall. The Great Salt Plains State Park is a strange place. The salt is from an ocean that covered Oklahoma in prehistoric times, and the lake is about half as salty as the ocean. You drive through miles of farmland, then in the middle of nowhere, is this huge white plain.

Selenite crystals form in the salt plains, and they have designated areas where you can dig. I had the idea that the crystals would hard to find, but that is not the case. They are everywhere! In fact, you are allowed to remove up to ten pounds of crystals per day!

If you are ever in Oklahoma, it is worth the trip, but I do have one bit of advice. Don’t go in the middle of summer. It was about 70 degrees F when we went, and the sun reflecting off all that salt made it so hot! I can’t imagine what it would be like if it was 90 or 100 degrees.
