I had a conversation with my son this week and it revolved mainly about the little steps we take and the stuff to be proud of. He just finished the second grade and has had a rough week in simply trying to do anything this week. He has fallen trying to do bike tricks, stumbled with math questions, argued with his younger brother and much more— and of course each instance has been accompanied by a mini meltdown.

May be we are all just a bit tired of each other and that has us more on edge. After all, our weeks are spent confined inside, only to be broken up by the occasional grocery store trip or time spent in the back yard. Either way, it has had us a bit more grumpy than usual but we are all dealing.

One of the surprising things of this conversation was my son asking me to detail what I’m proud of, specifically his smaller or as he terms them, insignificant steps. You see, we spent time talking about being hard on ourselves and unable to see the wins and be happy. As you all may know, I’m an optimist overall but my son is definitely not. I’m not sure I can change this and I’m not sure I want to, but I do want him to see his small wins as they are or can be— steps in a right direction versus   attempts that fall short. This is a lesson we all need. It is true of the social turmoil we are facing as we feel despair in being unable to make lasting change. It is true of our economic recovery and it is true of our battle to overcome Covid 19. We take steps to make change. Even if they are small, they are meaningful.

Happy writing this week!
