unexpected art

Every once in a while, I am reminded that the world is even weirdly richer than I thought.

My daughter, a metals artist, recently completed this commission of a decorative throwing ax for a biology professor who is a member of an all-women throwing-ax team. I did not before know that ax throwing even was a competitive sport...

More of Anne's art at https://annebujold.com/

(Also this link, which I've posted before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYdT_... )

Display rack woodwork by Ken Fisher, a BFA student at the Appalachian Center for Craft, where Anne is currently an artist-in-residence. "Natural Selection" is the name of the ax team.

(This particular ax, though full sized, is not actually for throwing.)

Willow I love this casual brag about your talented daughter. She, like you, takes things and textures that we know and artfully combines them in a new and unusual way. How fabulous that she's an artist and a blacksmith, and that there is a society of female blacksmiths. You must be so proud.

Axe throwing is quite en Vogue at the moment. I bet if you check out your local Groupon, you can find an experience for a reasonable price. It's A little crazy, best done with friends. Seeing as it's Betty White's 98th birthday, I'm imagining the Golden Girls going to an axe throwing girls' night out. ☺️ that would make a great Saturday Night Live sketch.

For that matter, it's just the sort of thing to attract young people's attention on Barrayar for a fun night out. Even the emperor would have his own private axe throwing wall.

Sea Bunny Voyager It made me snicker, I love it.

And yes, axe throwing is quite the competitive thing! There's even a brewing company out there called 'Hatchets and Hops', whose trademark is their throwing axes.

Kristi L. There are two places here in my town for having axe throwing parties. Recently saw an invite to a retirement party at one of these places.
