Why I've Stopped Reading The Wheel of Time (for now)

Robert Jordan‘s Wheel of Time series has been a part of my reading life for almost three years now. I’ve stopped reading at 37% into The Fires of Heaven (#5) and I can’t bring myself to keep reading right now. I thought I would write a post to explain how I am feeling about this series right now.

If anyone has read more of the series than me and has some optimism about the series, please let me know down in the comments. Or, if you stopped reading like me – why did you stop?

Yana Petrovska I've stopped reading The Wheel of Time on the second book and I don't even have a reason. I am planning on giving it a try again next year.

Tim Higginbotham I'm probably taking a break after I finish 'The Dragon Reborn' this weekend. I started the series back in August and now wanna catch on my TBR before diving into book 4. I'm loving the series even though the pacing is mad slow. I kinda feel the same about loving the series but feel like I'm pushing through it at times (seems weird to say so early on in the series). There are some moments that are page-turners and others that just feel uninteresting against the rest of the plot, in my opinion.

Katie Leslie I started in August and am on book 6 right now. I strongly recommend the audiobooks - I definitely wouldn't have read them quickly without the audio to help.
I listen to the slow bits while commuting, walking, cleaning, cooking, etc, and save the fast bits for physically reading. It makes it so I never get bored with the story, even though it's mad slow at times. They've been uploaded to Youtube so you can listen for free.

Mylene De Ruijter The audiobooks is what my partner is listening to as well, he enjoys that so much that he even listens to them when he takes the shower. For me, audiobooks do not really work, I zoom out and think about heaps of other things. It was good to read your blog post Tommye, and I hope that you will pick it up again because you want to, and not because you feel like you have to finish. For me, that makes a huge difference in how I enjoy the books. 14 books is a lot, and if you feel like you have to finish, that is a long road to go. And let's be real, if you end up not liking the series, for whatever reason, there are still so many other amazing stories in this genre ;).

Utkarsh Karkare Hi Tommye,

Just read this post and thought we are both in the same boat (to an extent).

Once I got used to the writing style, I went through the first three books pretty quick. I took a short break of a week after that.

Then got into Book 4 which was huge !!

Then a break of a solid 1.5 months, where I read some graphic novels & non-fiction to change the mood a bit. That helped immensely.

I am now into Book 5 and completed it 50% last night. Completely invested into the story and looking forward to reading it further ahead.

I think with such a long series, the best thing to do is to take those breaks in between or it will quickly lead to fatigue.

I am mostly planning on another break after Book 6 or 7 (depends on how I feel at that point).

The comments here are absolutely right - the pacing can drag tremendously at times in the series.
