November - The Lighter Side of College

Dublin Business School recently held a Christmas party evening for the part-time students. This was run by the Project Management students and donations were invited in aid of a hospice. The Journalism Society was requested to attend and cover the event, so several of us came along and had a great time, participating in the relay race with a team called Jingle Bell Rockers.

Here’s my brief version of the party. We each wrote up the event and sent the notes to Lea Lair the head of the Journalism Society. Lea is a third-year student from France. She compiled all our notes into one article and chose from our photos to accompany the text. I have to say that reading Lea’s final product was almost more fun than the party night itself.

The DBS event Light Up Your Life was tremendous fun with something for everyone. I arrived after all the prosecco and mulled wine had been taken but there was still hot chocolate which was just perfect, and sweet, salty or spicy snacks. I really liked that the part time students were mingling and meeting one another as these students normally just meet the same few people all semester.

With party games guaranteed to dispel any shyness, the students were soon laughing and cheering. We had a relay race of tossing parcels to team members to fill Santa’s sack of presents. Another game involved decorating a human Christmas tree. When many students had already been given glitter makeup and red or green beards, it could be hard to know where decorations left off and makeup began.

Of course the evening had a serious side because we should think of other people at Christmas and help those in need. A few songs and a moment’s reflection helped us think of the evening’s charity, a hospice. The raffle tickets were sold in aid of the hospice and all donations were gratefully received. Three of the Journalist Society members won prizes which made a brilliant end to the party for us.

Thanks to the organisers for putting in so much time and effort! The Common Room looked fantastic with decorations, tree, presents, several helpful elves, and even a real life Grinch. Happy Christmas!

I am knee deep in reference books right now to get my essays finished. Other articles this semester for my assignments have included a Freedom of Information request, an interview about electric cars, a visit to a hearing at the Coroner’s Court (which will inform my crime fiction writing) and a look at immigration. Plenty of variety.
