The Case for Beth Dutton

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have recently read me waxing poetic about the Kevin Costner television show that airs on the Paramount network: Yellowstone.

Now, a television show that reminds us that the first American outlaws were the cowboys, and we may have glorified them through history, but the premier American outlaws are still cowboys…I want me some of that.

See, apparently they just live in sparsely populated areas where us city folk and those who don’t live among magnificent vistas or spend much (any) time on a horse don’t hear much about their antics.

So, as I’m waxing poetic about this show (Rip Wheeler) and obsessing on this show (Rip Wheeler) something that has happened before, numerous times when reading how folks talk about how they feel about heroines, happened again.

Something distressing.

You see, trying not to spoil anything (though, if you’re a no-spoiler freak like me, there definitely are spoilers in this, so beware – this show is not for the faint-of-heart, and if you’re an animal lover, wary watching, my friends – that said, it…is…epic)…

The men in this show do some pretty brutal things. Like, felonious things. Like, you don’t want anyone to tell you they’re taking you to the “train station” because, well, you do not wanna board that train.

But in my comments on Facebook, along with a number of folks sharing how much they like, even love, even worship Beth Dutton, the princess of Yellowstone, there were also a number of folks sharing how much they hate her.

How she is selfish.

How she is foul-mouthed.

How, “even if she were a man,” she wouldn’t get away with some of the stuff she pulls (though, she’s never taken anyone to the train station, just sayin’).

And although Beth is a very complicated, tortured, broken-souled woman, she was trained to be that, rather viciously, by her very own mother. Because she lives among these men, and for her own sake, to be able to do that and not get beaten down, she has to be able to hold her own.

Beth’s wicked smart and she’s a good learner.

But if you watch closely, there is almost nothing Beth does for Beth.

Everything Beth does is for her father or her family.

Or for Rip.

I’m not sure how that translates to selfish.

What I am sure is that we (women) hold each other to a higher standard than we do men.

Or, perhaps, a different standard. The standard of what we personally feel a woman should be.

I only noted one gal share she was turned off from the show due to the violence displayed by the men.

Now, why is this attractive for men? Men who are doing these things for ranch and family, so we “get it.” That drive to protect. That drive to, at all costs, keep what they, or their forebears, earned. That drive to do anything to respect the ones that went before and hold safe what they can give to future generations.

We exalt it.

We celebrate and champion it.

But a woman making moves to protect her own, and she doesn’t do this by keeping men fed or smoothing their brow, but she’s down to play dirty, is frowned upon and garners name-calling, dislike or even hatred?

Do I agree with everything Beth does on this show?

Absolutely not.

If this stuff were real and not fiction, and Beth calculated then took forward the moves she made to protect her family, seek revenge or make an unmissable point about how she expects the ones she cares about to be treated (the store scene in Season 2, Episode 9: sheer brilliance) would I agree with them?

Abso-freaking-lutely.

There are a set of scenes, deep into the second season, where the beauty of Beth just as she is, is unrestrained (see episodes 7 and the aforementioned 9).

Her mother rammed an ironclad backbone straight down her spine and not a thing is gonna bend it.

And not a thing does.

And I could debate the need for that, for a mother doing that to her daughter, willfully, with intent, but I don’t live on a ranch in Montana (but Lord, I wish I did – just for the wardrobe, and of course, RIP WHEELER!).

What I will say is all the men before with their sons, they did the same…damned…thing.

And we admire it.

Making a man a man.

But who is to say what the making of a woman is?

Hell, who’s to say what makes a man?

What I also will say is, I’m not a fan of this judgement we have for our sisters.

What we’ll not only allow men to get away with, but we’ll laud it. It makes them attractive. It makes them “worthy.”

But a woman does that, oh no. She should be baking apple pies. She should keep the F-words out of it, not use (in some cases) her greatest tool (her sexuality), and play by a certain, undefinable, feminine set of rules.

No, no offense intended, but if baking pies is not her gig, she should do whatever she wants to do.

Beth Dutton is one of the strongest, most complicated, most fascinating women on television. She is extraordinary. She is everything a woman should be, if they want.

Not because she holds her own in a man’s world.

But because she kicks ass her way in a man’s world.

And that’s the case for Beth Dutton.

Long may she wreak havoc on anyone who threatens Yellowstone.

Larissa I haven't had a chance to check out the show but I have definitely seen the rave reviews for Rip - I mean Yellowstone. :)

message 2: by Susan (new)

Susan Sunderlin Let the choir say ‘amen and hallelujah!’

Formerly Known as Spoiler W It’s entertainment so therefore I’m entertained. Thank you for raving about this show. New obsession is Rip Wheeler. Beth is her own and I love that she owns it. Favorite epi is season two, epi seven. Not even gonna comment on how many times I’ve rewatched that epi.

message 4: by Kim (new)

Kim Ross That store scene was epic. I dont even know how to put myself in a situation to use that line. But, if I ever find myself there, Im stealing it! Also. I love the polar differences between Beth and Monica. At the end of this season, they showed that Beth can be soft and if pushed, Monica has those same instincts that Beth does. I think this is the greatest show on right now and for a while. And Rip is awesome, but Cole Hauser, the actor who plays him, is actually just as awesome. Taylor Sheridan is brilliant. If you havent, check out Wind River (movie).

message 5: by Judith (new)

Judith I've not watched the show because we don't have Paramount, but I reviewed on Google. I totally agree with your view of Beth. For those that are raised in this type of family, I would think the girls would have backbone out the wazoo. It seems this is a tough family. Women who grew up in those environments scratched and fought along side their husbands to survive.

message 6: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Yes! Yes! YES! I frakin LOVE this!!!! I made a comment on the original FB post that Beth reminds me a lot of Franka... so misunderstood and misinterpreted and so hard but when you get through the hard there are so many layers you would need a lifetime to get to the heart of her! I LOVE ME SOME BETH AND AND FRANKA!

message 7: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Souther Just love this! Strong women are often very selfless but perceived to be selfish. God forbid they be aggressive! I had someone tell me early in my career I was a bitch. I was young and so hurt - first real job after college. That person told me later it was a good thing cause I was aggressive and went for it. She said it was better to be a bitch than be thought of as ambitious (wtf?). Anyway - one of my best friends is a very high powered exec at Fortune 500 company. There are many nights she calls me crying cause she still gets “if you were a man”. She is also the most generous person I ever met. Rock on strong women!!!!

message 8: by Nicolette (new)

Nicolette This. Everything you say about Beth. It’s the God’s honest TRUTH! That women does anything for her family and people HATE her for it, only because she gets dirty and “nasty mouthed” like the men. I compare Beth to Gemma from SOA. Even though she DID so felonious things, she did them for her family, and protection of her family. Even when they were wrong! Strong characters like these are few and far between, and I have to admit that I love me a badass woman who will play with the men, heck, even go FURTHER than the men sometimes! I’m so happy to see I have other viewers who feel like I do towards her!

message 9: by T.J. (new)

T.J. Lee As I responded to your previous FB post, Beth Dutton is my spirit animal. (Note: Amazon and Etsy have some great Beth-themed and Yellowstone-themed shirts). She and Rip are hands down the best characters written for any TV show right now. I think next season we will find out what is behind all of Beth’s inner pain, which seems to be the driver to a lot (most?) of what she does.

I always look forward to, in every episode, that quotable line from Beth. “I always knew you tucked it in your sock.” Omg, Classic! That rooftop scene though! Breathtaking!

And bless Jimmy - I cried when he won his belt buckle. I love that entire bunkhouse crew.

But back to Beth (Short for Bethany, not Elizabeth) - amazingly written character portrayed by a magical actress. For anybody who hasn’t watched Yellowstone, please do so - you won’t be sorry.

Amy Omg I love Beth seriously in love with her. Whoever wrote the store scene needs an Oscar for the writing and The actress who pulls off Beth is deserving of one as well. Not since Katey Sagal who played Gemma in SOA have we had such a wonderful female anti hero. That’s how I think of her she totally could have been in one of ur antihero books. She doesn’t do bad things for herself but for her family there are no lines that she will not cross. She’s just absolutely wonderful.

message 11: by Connie (new)

Connie I just binge watched this show, both seasons...because I heard such good things about it...first glimpse of Rip and it was ooohh mmyy, definitely love a cowboy...then you watch his devotion to the man who he sees as his father and to Beth, who is all hardass crazy devoted to her father and the land their family fought to get and fights to keep. She cowboys up her way. And Rip, god he sees her.. takes her just how she's willing/able to give...the scene on the roof top under the big sky...just how he looks at her.. and her..."don't say it...say it when I need it". The violence in the late night office scene, its hard to breathe just remembering it. Rip gets to her finally...and he says it, what she needed to hear...to bring her to herself and to him...ground her. I lost it, sobbed...it was an epic scene.
You can say what you want about the store scene, Beth walked right in claiming Monica straight out because she loves her brother and her brother loves her, they weren't close,
they hardly knew each other... but you dish out humiliation onto someone for any reason...you should have it come back on you 100 fold..f-that, a 1,000 fold. She probably went 10,000 fold...but that's her, all in. But anyone with a family member, you don't let anyone abuse, make fun of...no matter if you are ticked as heck or getting along, you stand up for them and take their back...at least in my family we do.
I'm glad to hear that the show gets another season. Beth is like no other character I have really seen on TV. This show has pulled me right into it from the first episode. Just like my favorites..Justified, SOA, Longmire and Bosch ..to name a few.

message 12: by Toni (new)

Toni G First, kudos to the actress, Kelly Reilly.. She’s British but in this role she’s 100% Beth. Beth is one of the most hardened, fragile, complicated, devoted, passionate, and fucked up female characters I’ve encountered. It’s a juicy role and I’m fascinated by her and fearful of her. This is a fierce show. What I’ll say is I’m attracted to all the masculinity in the show. I also praise the way the writers and directors give time and space to the varying perspectives and experiences of an array of diverse characters. Nobody is turning a blind eye to the cultural, class, wealth (or lack of) and political intricacies st play. In another post someone mentioned Gemma. I get it.

message 13: by Sue (new)

Sue Dilly You've actually got me hooked as well over in the UK , although I have struggled to find anyone who airs it over here.
I do agree it isn't for the faint hearted, but does keep you watching. Beth is fascinating to watch in action, as is Rip!!

message 14: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Amen! She is the strongest women and my fave line is when her father says to Jamie. What did you do. I see fear in her when she fears nothing. Beth Dutton fears nothing. I envy that.

message 15: by Bex_Book_Revieux (new)

Bex_Book_Revieux Really looking forward to seeing the first episode of Yellowstone. Thank you for standing up about Beth, and the way we women hold other women to such a different level than men. I think if we ever get to the point that we stop doing that, women will find a level of success they can't imagine at this point.

message 16: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Preach, sista!

message 17: by Chelle (new)

Chelle You speak the truth! I love Beth. I actually started watching the show because of what you had written on Facebook. My husband and I binge watched season 1 & 2 over a week - and we both loved it. At the end of the episode where Beth rescued Monica at the boutique - I looked at my husband and told him straight up that I freakin love Beth.

message 18: by Lex (new)

Lex I will literally watch whatever you recommend. Just because you're amaze-balls. And your soundbite? On. Par. Now I need to go stream this show.

message 19: by Libby (new)

Libby Hicks Beth and Rip are the most interesting couple.Yellowstone is a great show.

message 20: by Roza (new)

Roza Hear hear babe. true words Miss Ashley.

message 21: by Glenna (new)

Glenna I love this show. Not many shows compare to this one. About died when the vet worked on Kevin and the rupture!!!!! I love this show and can’t wait for next season....

message 22: by Glenna (new)

Glenna Love this show and the way you think

message 23: by Theresa (new)

Theresa I love this show, counting down the days until its back on, and my favorite character from Lost will be on the show now. As for Beth I happen to love her character, she tough, no nonsense. Don't mess with Beth

message 24: by Lyla (new)

Lyla Bellatas I adore Beth!!! Absolutely!

message 25: by Jerrie (new)

Jerrie well better late than never on voting Yes for Beth taking the bull by the horns and having the Power not to give a F__k! love her and jealous she gets Rip!
Yes I ordered t-shirts cant wait to wear them!,
Hard to wait one more month before Yellowstone is back!!

message 26: by Mae (new)

Mae Olsen I have to agree! We only recently discovered Yellowstone and are in the middle of the second season. I love Beth! She is complicated, strategic, witty, and oddly caring (in a very different way)...it's glorious to watch. She pulls no punches and why should she. It's great to see a very different kind of female character. It's OK for a woman to be tough. And people need to see that.

message 27: by Glenna (new)

Glenna I absolutely agree. Loved when she turned the “tables” on the boutique owner. I have watched that episode like five or six times. I love Beth and Rip. I am definitely in their corner. I will be devastated if things are fatal with any of the main characters. This season ending floored me. Please let them all live. I wouldn’t miss this show for anything.
