The Snag

If you follow me on social media, you know I just finished the new fantasy series I’ve written for an Audible exclusive. This was months of being in a deep dive of world building where pretty much anything can happen, I just had to keep track of every, single nuance of it.

And now it’s done. The last book in that four-part series.

Now beware.

I’m gonna make a grand statement here.

It wrecked me.

It wrecked me worse than any book I’ve written wrecked me and a fair few of my books put me through the wringer (read: pretty much all of them).

You see, I pour myself into my books. I giggle myself sick at my character’s antics. I cry my eyes out when life kicks them in the teeth. As I’m typing, I make the faces they make that I describe in my books. I exclaim the words that come out of their mouths when they get surprised.

But this one was responsible for the demise of two boxes of tissue.

TWO!

I’ll say here, it always…

Knock on wood, voodoo dance of good luck, salt over shoulder…

Always, it comes easy. The words flow out of me.

Until I hit “The Snag.”

Usually it happens about two-thirds or three-quarters of the way into writing a book. That two, three, four, five chapters where my fingers slow and my mind wanders, and I…just…can’t.

Every word I write is rubbish. The whole book is a disaster. What am I doing? What am I writing? Why am I writing? This has all been a fluke. It’s going to come crashing down with this one book and I’m going to have to get a job as a waitress in a Harley bar or I’m going to have to sell my house and Starla and me will live in the back of the bakery that I’ll have to open (I always fancy one of these two things will be what I’d do if I wasn’t writing, I’m sure this comes as no surprise).

The last entire book of The Rising series was one huge 140,000-word snag.

I know what The Snag is. I know what it means. I know why it happens.

The end is nigh for me. When I have to say goodbye. When I will never, ever be in that book with those characters in that way again.

I could write a short story. A novella. A spin-off.

But never again that immersion.

Oh, when they first meet.

Their first kiss.

And their first argument.

When he says words to hurt her.

When he does something melty to balm that pain.

When she pushes him away.

When he shows her why she should let him in.

The adventures and the closeness forming, and the days pass where the history they’re creating builds the foundation they’ll need for about eighteen thousand tomorrows…

I hit The Snag because I’ll never be in that. I know I’ll soon have to say goodbye to all of that.

And I don’t want to let go.

This last book in The Rising took a month to write and it was a month of that struggle.

I hate to let go.

I hate to say goodbye.

I detest The Snag which is indication that’s going to happen and there’s nothing I can do to stop it no matter how hard my brain works to do just that.

And then the final two, three, four chapters fly like lightning from my fingertips. It’s all about the HEA. My entire being becomes a drive to getting them safe. Secure. Settled.

Happy.

And then…getting them to you.

This is the agony and the ecstasy, all at the same time.

How lucky am I? I don’t leave my chair, and I go on mad, wild, phenomenal adventures. I live and breathe for it. It’s worth every tissue. Every frustration. Every doubt.

And I’m delighted, after living the drama of that series since I started it last November (the concept of which I’ve never tried before, but that particular set of books has been begging me to tell their tale for a good long time), that it’s done.

But, God…

I’m going to miss it. I’m gonna miss Mars and his Silence, Cassius and his Elena, Aramus and his Ha-Lah, True and his Farah – and all that came with them like I miss all my babies. Miss being in their lives. Immersed in their worlds.

Man, am I gonna miss it…

Like crazy.

Sarah Slusarczyk It’s is going to be so epic and I can NOT WAIT! Fantasyland is one series that opened my mind and my imagination, that gave me good dreams and happy thoughts, it was such a amazing escape and a even more amazing read. For there to me more to come is such a treat!

Angela Tonna Are the four books going to be with four different couples or with the same one?

message 4: by Betty (new)

Betty The four couples are listed in last part of blog. I am real curious about how Silence got her name.

message 5: by Arlene (new)

Arlene Gately Are you planning on writing a follow on to Mathilda? I am desperate to know if she stays with Ash or Aiden! I feel like there is so much story left - their life in Denver, her relationship with her brother and father, who she ends up marrying, etc.

Mary I understand how it wrecks you...a little bit how it wrecks me as I hit the last 25% of any and all of your books. Not only worried about how it ends but feeling like a family member moved away forever or even died. The only saving feature is that I can read and re-read and re-read so I never quite lose these people. Thank you for hours of happiness, suspense, angst and all the feels..you're the absolute best!

Cyle Cant wait for this series!! I'm excited to try both audio and reading it, I loved fantasyland and I can tell how much love you put in this new series and as always with your writing. Cant wait!

message 8: by Namelaura (new)

Namelaura Forrest As an audible exclusive does that mean no actual book or Kindle version? If so I am not happy😡

message 9: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary Doman Just finished the first one....again. Can’t wait to travel over the Green Sea!

Heather Jenkins I can relate to ‘the snag” not as a writer, but a reader and fan. I race through your books because I just cannot wait to be a part of your worlds again - then experience the melancholy when finished because it is over. The one brilliant side is that I have re- read everything you have written at least 3 times each ... once I finish a series - I restart another . Oh and did I mention Audibles - yup listen to them all over and over . I am never without a KA book in progress - you have created so many adventures for us to take - they never get old ! I simply cannot wait to jump into your latest .

Viviana I can not wait. Your books are amazing. Rock On!

Beverly A Really looking forward to these books. Your fantasy stories are some of your best writing. The Golden Dynasty is my favorite book of yours. You truly are a gift.

Me too! Mathilda was the first KA book I’d ever read! I put off reading the Rock Chicks for 2 years!! Why you might ask? Waiting for the next installment of Mathilda!

message 16: by Patti (new)

Patti Smith Love the fantasy series. Can’t wait for this one. Love all your books. Read re read, repeat! All your books . Thanks for sharing. At Peace , Sweet Dreams , wow, I could keep going every time I read another.

Alejandra That's why I love your books..you write them from the heart!

message 18: by Nefol_ (new)

Nefol_ No! Audible exclusive? I cannot. Tears, seriously tears. I'm a kinetic learner and a visual reader. Anything audible goes in one ear and out the other. In class, at work, in meetings, if I'm not taking notes I'm not understanding a word you're saying. Please (pretty please) tell me these books will eventually be out in "print" either e-ink, or even paperback?

I’m pretty sure she is releasing the audio book at the same time as print addition. That’s all. Not just a audiobook..

I agree with you Julie. I simply cannot follow along on an audiobook. Hopefully, this new series will be like the Complicated audiobook exclusive. It came out on Audible for about 30 days before a general release (simultaneous release would be even better!).

message 21: by Susan (new)

Susan Lovett Your writings are the icing on my life’s cakes! They are a joy. In divulging how hard it is to let go - another comment submitted stated that is why your books are so AMAZING! Because you pour yourself into them, but I would like to add that at least you do not Kill Everybody that You Become Attatched to in the story OFF! I am reading for the excitement- entertainment- enjoyment on my down time. I have none of those if every character that I become attatched to dies (and USUallysome horrific, tragic, devastating way). Thanks again for sharing the gift of your talent and I am TOTALLY buying the audiobook!

message 22: by Jaci (new)

Jaci am I missing something? I've been to audible.co.uk and there's no sign of this series.- when will they be released? I have loads of your books in both kindle & audio versions, I absolutely adore them all!

message 23: by Susan (new)

Susan I can't wait for it to come out in print....I will, but it will be a struggle....and oh, so worth it...:)
