கார்ல் சகனும் அரவிந்தரும்

இன்று உங்கள் தளத்தில் ஒரு கட்டுரையில் காணப்பட்ட ஒரு சுட்டியில் இருந்து கார்ல் சாகன் கட்டுரைக்குச் சென்று படிக்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. இந்தப் பத்தி எனக்கு அரவிந்தரின் சாவித்திரியை நினைவுபடுத்தியது:

'ஆனால் கிறித்தவத்தின் மனிதாபிமான தத்துவ எல்லைக்கு மேல் நகர கார்ல் சகனால் முடியவில்லை என்பது உண்மையில் புரிந்துகொள்ளச் சிரமமான ஒன்று. நாவல் எல்லியில் குவிந்து அவள் கண்டடைந்த இறுதி தரிசனத்தை அடைந்து முழுமை பெறுகிறது. அது கிறிஸ்துவின் மனிதநேயம் மட்டும்தான் – தொடும்போது அது அதுவரை நாவல் உருவாக்கிய அனைத்து மன விரிவுகளையும் எதிர்த் திசைக்கு திருப்பிவிட்டு ஒற்றைப்புள்ளியில் குவிப்பதாக மாறிவிடுகிறது. அதாவது அந்த மாபெரும் பயணமே தேவை இல்லை என்பதுபோல அது அர்த்தப்படுகிறது. அறிவுக்கு எதிரானதாக அன்பை வைத்துப் பேசிய கிறித்தவ மரபின் குரலையே அங்கு நாம் கார்ல் சகனில் காண்கிறோம். இந்நாவலின் மிகப்பெரிய பலவீனம் இந்த திரும்பிச் செல்லல்தான்.'

The sages ask Savitri (Book XII, Epilogue) what was that she found after her quest that spanned travelling psychically the entire cosmos, and her reply is almost the same as Ellie's :

'Then one spoke there who seemed a priest and sage:

"O woman soul, what light, what power revealed,

Working the rapid marvels of this day,

Opens for us by thee a happier age?"

Her lashes fluttering upwards gathered in

To a vision which had scanned immortal things,

Rejoicing, human forms for their delight.

They claimed for their deep childlike motherhood

The life of all these souls to be her life,

Then falling veiled the light. Low she replied,

"Awakened to the meaning of my heart

That to feel love and oneness is to live

And this the magic of our golden change,

Is all the truth I know or seek, O sage."

Wondering at her and her too luminous words

Westward they turned in the fast-gathering night.'

Incidentally it is a woman in both cases and both have travelled in realms outside our sensory world. Both seem to say the same! There is indeed a subtle difference which is nevertheless crucial in interpreting Savitri's message. I would leave it to JM for elaborating it, if he wants to.
