Baseball and Saving a World

Strxia: The Odds Are Against Us Strxia: The Odds Are Against Us by Maggie Daniels

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

For years I watched my sons play Little League Baseball. The games were fun, the boys learned sportsmanship, as well as had a good time and made friends. I had never thought about math being a part of baseball, however, except for keeping score and counting strikes, balls, and runs, until I read STRXIA by Maggie Daniels and Matt Michel. And boy did I learn a lot, not only about baseball but about math as well.

In STRXIA we meet an interesting cast of characters, the young baseball players Seth, Jared, Alex, and Chase, as well as their coaches and others. So, we’re all set to watch the kids play ball, but wait, other things are happening that could mean the end of the parallel world, known as Strxia, and the kids are the only ones that can save it.

So you thought you were reading a book about baseball, but that is only part of the story. The math plays an important role not only in what happens to Strxia but how the baseball game turns out. Now, I’ll admit that math was my worst subject in school, but after reading this novel I might have learned a little about it. I like the way the kids worked together to solve their problems. And I loved that Alex is a girl, who is just as good a baseball player as any of the boys.

STRXIA is a story of friendship and teamwork and never giving up. I recommend this novel for middle school libraries, public libraries, and your own library. And, like me, you may learn something you didn’t expect to. Happy Reading
