10 Tips To Give a Powerful TEDx Talk
In preparation for my own TEDx Talk on Nov 11, 2018, I have written my script down and revised it more than 10 times, recorded my talk every single day for the past 2 weeks, and watched over 50 TEDx Talks on YouTube to learn HOW strong speaks deliver incredible talks! Here are 10 lessons I have learned in preparing for my TEDx Talk: 1) Ask for Help Create your own TEDx Talk Feedback Team who will give you tips and advice about what to keep, what to remove, and what to change. I posted on my Social Media and within 1 hour of me posting and had 20 willing friends who have helped me tremendously! So many people are ready to help – you just need to ASK! 2) Follow the Intro, Body, Outro Structure People think about the Beginning, Middle, End Structure so make sure you have a strong start that builds rapport, a content-rich body that educates and entertains, and a bold finish that has an inspiring conclusion. The opening and the closing is what people will remember the most. 3) Use the Rule of Threes I use the Rule of Threes several times in my speech. 3 questions in a row at the beginning (How many people love to travel?) 3 steps to travel the world as a Digital Nomad (Save, Sell, Serve) 3 examples to support my points (Ricky’s Digital Nomad Journey, Rianne’s YouTube Channel, Ryan’s Orphanage Stay) 3 stories in my TEDx Talk (My Story, Your Story, Our Story) 4) Use the Power of STORY Facts Tell, Stories SELL. Humans are hardwired to pay close attention to stories (through history, through our parents, through the media, through schools, through social media, through blogs, through books, through podcasts, through movies). Make sure you pepper Power Stories and the Hero’s Journey in your talk. 5) Focus on EMOTION (not Logic) I started my first draft with a lot of info, focused on content and education. However, over the next few drafts, I transitioned to make my script more inspirational and motivatinoal (rather than strictly informational and factual). Also, people who gave me feedback told me that the inspirational parts were the BEST parts of my talk. 6) Write down THE ENTIRE SCRIPT You might be tempted to just write the outline or just wing it / improvise it as you go.
