Our Veterans: The Keepers Of The Song

When I think of our Veterans, I hear a patriotic playlist in my head. From the fife and drum of our continental soldiers, to the Civil War’s Battle Hymn Of The Republic, I hear it in my mind. Then to World War 1 and Over There, to God Bless America, written in one war, and revived in World War 2, they continue.

Beyond them are other songs, just as there were other conflicts. The writer, tune, singer, and face of the veteran has changed, but one thing has not. In America’s most dire times of need, there has been a song in her heart.

Why, because those who held it’s melody in their chest, weren’t marching towards fame and glory. They did not go to war to go into the history books, though they did in the process. Americans went to defend their country, to fight for freedom, to maintain the notes that men like Washington laid out in the first stanza of our history.

So that artillery bursts, could give way to fireworks on Independence Day. Men bowed their heads in bunkers, praying for victory, so others could freely raise their hands in worship, thanking God for freedom in spirit. Our veterans sacrificed time with their families, risked life, limb, and individual futures, so we all could stand freely.

Their patriotism gave us this wonderful song, wrapped, and rewrapped, in layers of love and sacrifice. We honor those today who carried rifles, hope, and this tune called America in their hearts across every battlefield. God Bless our Veterans, and God Bless America!
