Geriatric Sex
To the Editor:
While reading Alex Kuczynski’s review of the novel “The Family Tabor” [by Cherise Wolas] (Aug. 19), I was shocked when she wondered how Harry and his wife could have fabulous sex for 44 years. She made it sound improbable. In fact, many long-married couples can enjoy a healthy sex life into the later years.
A study of the sex habits of 70-year-olds in Sweden from 1970 to 2001 found that older adults are having more sex than we might think. Of all the sexually active older adults interviewed at the end of the study, roughly 25 percent reported having sex at least once a week (compared with 10 percent in the 1970s). Not only that, but at least half of the men and women said their relationships were “very happy.”
