The Magic Travel Formulae

I found this on a scrap of paper where I'd written down what I thought was an interesting piece of information. Unfortunately I can't remember who said it or where I was when I heard it.

Does make some sense though:

In medieval times travel took a long time. In order to calculate travel times for a fantasy or a historical tale use the following rule of thumb.

What would take a person 23 days to travel on foot…

Would take a person on horseback 6 days…

But a person on a boat could cover the same distance in one day.

Subject to the usual restrictions, of course… like storms and mountains and pirates etc,…

Well, it could prove useful if you are trying to move your character across the landscape, as we writers are wont to do...
