Effing Feline teases dogs #8sunday

I, Effing Feline, hate the cat videos on Youtube. Instead of glorifying my glorious species, they portray us as creatures to laugh at. That is so misguided. If you silly humans really must laugh at some animal, laugh at dogs instead!

Ed is working on rewrites of his near-future SFR tentatively titled Audra Fleeing Audra Finding. Audra Verhailey, a runaway young mother, flees with her baby from Oregon to Kwadra Island — a “duplicate” of Vancouver Island that its Native American rulers “hopped” here from an alternate Earth.

Penniless and desperate, twenty-something Audra lets a Kwadran construction worker guide her up a wilderness mountain to a back entrance to Kwadra’s abandoned underground cities. Eyes twinkling, he tells her they’ve reached their goal and challenges her to see what’s invisible. She succeeds, seeing bushes swaying in the breeze from the ventilation tunnel they were searching for.

The twinkle spread from his eyes to his whole face, revealing a different man underneath his impassive, unresponsive exterior. He was the opposite of Kwadran Island: Its buried cities were old and abandoned, but his buried features were young and full of life. For a second — two seconds — she was so startled by the change that she yearned to trust him.

“Your hiding spot awaits you, cheechako; whoever’s chasing you, they’ll never find you underground.” He rose effortlessly to his feet then reached a hand to help her rise.

Girding herself against that alluring moment of trust, she tightened her lips — but she was facing uphill, with Roxie on her chest. There was no way she could stand up on her own without undignified flopping and grunting and waking the baby, who’d want to eat, and no way was she breastfeeding in front of this guy — so she took his hand.

It was, she thought in surprise, a very nice hand, large, strong, and callused from honest hard work, though it somehow seemed delicate enough for more than mere hammering. He pulled both her and Roxie upright with ease, and she ended up nearer than she liked.

Audra discovered she didn’t mind this man’s closeness nearly as much as she expected.

Effing Feline here again. I told you about laughing at dogs — well, here is the absolutely perfect video for you to start on. This video is perfect. Ed can only hope to write something as timeless as this!
