Reverse Harem Romance V/R IRL…by Ripley Proserpina
When I began writing romance with a reverse harem twist nearly two years ago, there were very few authors and readers. In recent months, there have been a surge of RH books being published—which is awesome. Often, people wonder where reverse harem came from. It has its origin in Japan and South Korea, in anime and manga. In many of those stories (unlike the American reverse harem) characters will end up with only one of the many suitors who make up the harem.
Otome games are extensions of the RH (or RH is an extension of otome games, it’s a chicken/egg thing). Originating from Japan, these games are geared toward women. You play as a character and end up with one of several love interests. It’s RH VR. The games are often visual novels with pages of dialogue and background. It is only after the stage has been set that the female character is asked a question or offered a choice which leads to the romance.
Available on itunes (many are free but have in-app purchases), these stories great for waiting between appointments or playing on rainy days. Titles are links:)
Willow Bates is a recent college graduate who works at a small cafe and lives alone in her childhood home. Lonesome and suffocated by the tedium of working at an unfulfilling job, Willow found a quiet joy in Otome games. With few friends and a non-existent love life, shes grown attached to the happiness brought by romance novels.
We join our heroine as her mundane days are interrupted the morning she stumbles across strikingly handsome, vaguely familiar men. After a second glance, it all becomes clear: her favorite characters are now real.
“Be careful what you wish for.”
The Ultimate of Otome games: Mystic Messenger. This one is hard to describe. You start off as a character with an undefined job. You receive “texts” and “phone calls” from the characters and interact over days. From the description: A new type of female-oriented mobile game that you can experience a love story through an interactive messaging app. Receive phone calls and texts depending on how intimate you become with the game characters!
*Don’t read “intimate” as sexual. These games are PG.
So- I planned only to talk about games I’ve played, but I read about this one, and I think it’s next on my TBP list.
It is a visual novel, which means more reading than playing.
