Making Time For Writing by Mandy Rosko
Considering what an enormous black hole of procrastination the Internet can be, it gets difficult at times for me to write.
Not that I have trouble sitting down at my computer, but that the writing, or plotting, itself doesn’t seem to want to come when there’s just one more 15 minute Youtube video on my list of things I want to watch for the day.
It’s one of the reasons why I don’t have Netflix. If this is how bad I am with just Youtube or Twitter surfing, then how bad would it be if I had a Netflix subscription.
In fact, I’m checking Twitter while writing this, and I’m about 5K words behind on my writing goal for the month already >.<
Yeah…
So, what tricks do I do to help with the writing when I do find myself in a rut like this?
Well, for one thing, and you’ve likely heard this before already, but I like to occasional write out, or mentally plot out, what I’m going to be doing in my next chapter, and where I’ll be going. That helps make the actual writing move so much smoother, faster, and easier.
Another little trick is Write Or Die.
You’re on a timer, you sit there and write, and if you stop, the screen will flash red at you. Depending on your settings it will also scream at you. This is majorly helpful, trust me.
Another thing that helps, and this will depend a little more on your own personal bravery, but if I’m live streaming while working in some way, I’m definitely less likely to check out weird videos or websites. Less time wasted, more words written, amiright?
