Earthly Joys seems absolutely gorgeous! As Meat Loves Sales was planned right after The Charioteer. I have 50 more pages to go and I'm stalling so much you won't believe it, I don't want it to end. I really want Laurie to choose Ralph, but his is a Renault book and I never get what I want. :PThanks so much for the recommendations, Mymymble!
Ok, if you are going to read The Prisoner of Zenda (which is a pleasant read but not m/m, just saying) you absolutely need to read K.J. Charles' The Henchmen of Zenda afterwards because that is the flip-side of the coin. Both together are a delight.I'll have a look at my historical shelf for further recommendations.

And please, please any other recommendations are highly appreciated.
Ok, here come more recommendations in no particular order because that's like choosing your favourite child (or that's the metaphor people use who have children). They are all queer but not necessarily m/m or romance in the conventional sense. But I loved them all to pieces. All of them were written by contemporary authors.Box 1663 by Alex Sorel - new author but so engaging and well written.
Reckless by Jess Whitecroft - such fun!
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters - lesbian, so good.
The Unmentionables by Megan McFerren - it's not all hearts and flowers but it's a really good book with a strong message and I want everybody to read it.
Faster Than the Speed of Light by Lucius Parhelion. They seem to have stopped writing but you really need to read everything they ever wrote and it's almost all free.
Eleventh Hour by Elin Gregory - an author to watch out for, for sure.
The Open Arms of the Sea by Jasper Dorgan - I'm pretty sure that's the first and last book we'll get from that author and it's a crying shame because, man, that is one hell of a writer. But read it anyway. It's so worth it.
Night Fires in the Distance by Sarah Goodwin - lesbian, made me go to the kitchen to make sure I really had hot and cold running water because this is not what "Little House on the Prairie" prepared you for.
Think of England by K.J. Charles - for some reason this my favourite book of K.J. Charles but you can't go wrong with any books she wrote.
I could go on for some time but these are quite a number of the nearest and dearest to my heart. Enjoy! :-)
Wow!!! I love your recommendations @WhatAStrangeDuck ! The only one I've read was Box 1663 and I loved it so much that I messaged the author to beg her to change the cover to get more readers because that books needs to get to a wider audience.
And can you believe as a historical fanatic I haven't read any K.J Charles yet? I have to rectify that error very soon.
Thank you so much for all the recommendations! They are perfect.
Aaah Duck thank you for this! Just added half a dozen more things to my tbr that I’m excited about. I really need to get on that Box 1663 soon.

Thank you. *curtsies prettily* I hope you guys really enjoy them. There are so many books out there that never even get to the people who would really enjoy them and that is just such a shame. So many good books. So little time. So many of that time taken up by mediocre books. So many more recommendations needed by like-minded people.
Hit me.
;-)
Axios is sublime.Have you read the Society of Gentleman series by K.J. Charles or the Enlightenment series by Joanna Chambers? Both of those were fantastic if you haven't.
Nothing by K J Charles yet, shame on me! Thank you so much Cupcake for the recommendations! So sorry I missed the notification of your comment *apologetic bow*

Did you read
by Mary Renault ? I didn't see it in your list.

Did you read
while on vacation in Crete - not my favourite book by that author but sorry, I just have to rub that in because as reading experiences go that still pretty much takes the cake. It was a total coincidence but, yeah, I saw Knossos. I reclined under an olive tree while reading that book. Well, almost. Figuratively speaking ;-)I still got the paperback of The Last of the Wine in my (actual) shelves in my flat. Way back then in '95 I at least recorded the year I purchased a book and back then (I was, err... *DoingMaths*... 25/26 years old) I didn't love it. I've got a bit of an eye issue now so I vastly prefer e-books because I can adjust the font and brightness and so forth. I have the sneaking suspicion that I couldn't appreciate it back then because I was in full-on rebellion mode. We'll see. I'll put it on the back burner again :-).
