Maintenance
This week I want to talk about maintenance. I was scheduling an eye exam this past week and thought about all the things we have to continuously improve and work on. All the things that make life so complex and yet these are the things we don’t see to take into account as we plan out our vision for the future.
Take writing for instance. Most of the time, writing a book starts out as a thought – could I? Possibly? If she/he could, then I could… I have this idea… And truth be told, writing a book seems like such a feat. And it is a feat in some ways. It is blood, sweat, tears and tons of time poured out onto the digital pages of a word document. One day perhaps we finish this book and we celebrate as we should. But what many of us don’t realize is that for many (especially those who want writing to be more than a small time hobby), this work is just the beginning. Then comes the maintenance – more writing, social media, publicity, websites and spin offs, etc. And sure we can do some of this very cheaply or we can hire someone else to do it for us but for the former, it still takes a lot of time and for the latter option, it can get costly if you aren’t making much money to begin with.
So the lesson of today’s blog—think things out, and I mean all aspects out. I work with folks each day who have long-term goals like Retirement or buying a home but there are a lot of steps to get from point A to point B and only through our active efforts (and maintenance) will we be successful.
Happy writing this week!
