Maroon 5 got their first recording contract when the group was still in high school. Their sales were so dismal, their recording company dropped them. It would take ten years before the band would get another label and release "Stories for Jane."

Lead singer Adam Levine has said that the ten year hiatus, when he attended university and was exposed to R & B, urban music, completely changed the sound and the focus of the band.
