The Wheel of Time...

...Need I say more? I'm currently obsessed, and I've only read the prequel and up to book 3. Here's my response to a friend who wanted to know what I thought. It's a super-consolidation of my thoughts, but still...

Yeah, I do [recommend the books]. Well, WAIT: Not his Conan the Barbarian ones, lol. Just The Wheel of Time.  Here's the thing. There are flaws- slow-moving story at some points (like the first 100 pages of Book 1!)- repetitious thoughts/emotions- dumb hero syndrom (DUH you're the chosen one. every MC hero is...)- among others. His writing also slips every once and a while into the kind of mistakes I think you'll pick out immediately. BUT. The world in the stories is... enthralling. The overall conflict is so huge, so epic... Normally in a fantasy epic you have the "fellowship" that is the main focus of the story, then a host of secondary characters that usually get used once, then is forgotten about. With Wheel of Time... don't discount any, ANY character. Every one of them is in there for a reason.  Some farm girl from early in book 1 who was only there for maybe 10 out of 800 pages just came back in book 3, and she plays a significant (if short) role. I expect she'll be back later. I may be making more out of these books then I should. I think you really have to like fantasy to immerse yourself in them. But I haven't been able to not read them since I began. If you want to test the waters before diving into the 10,000+ pages of the series, read the prequel novel: New Spring. It's not even 400 pages, less than half of most of the books, and it gives you a good idea of what the rest of the series sounds like (though it's not quite as epic). ...Much ado about nothing... or maybe not. If you need more convincing (I would, had I not read them myself), just look at these sweeeeet e-book covers.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. But the last book, book 14, isn't even out yet. Drat.
