Preparing For The New Addition

Well, after several years of not having a dog, we're getting a one! We put it off for a long time because we moved so frequently with the Coast Guard, and it was hard moving with a dog — trying to find decent rentals isn't easy, especially not when the dog is a large breed. Much easier with a cat.

But now that we're in Wisconsin in our own home and we have no more moves with the military, we're taking the plunge!

Here's our girl — she'll be six months old when I pick her up in two weeks. She's a King Shepherd, a new breed that was developed using German Shepherds, Alaskan Malamutes, and Great Pyrenees dogs. So she'll be BIG. At five months she's already 60 lbs.

Her name is Hexe (pronounced Hex-uh,) which is German for witch. Perfect, since hubby wanted a German name, and given what I write, it fits!

Now, mind you, I'm a HUGE advocate of adopting shelter pets and rescues, and most of my pets have been exactly that. In fact, my cat is a rescue. But this dog breed, being so rare, isn't easy to find as a rescue, and we wanted a puppy…easier for the cat to adjust. Also, since the breed is so large, we wanted a puppy that our son could handle to establish a pack order where our son isn't on the bottom. So this slightly older puppy needed a home, and she came along at the perfect time. Now I just need to drum up the patience to wait!

So anyway, spending the day ordering puppy supplies! Yay! I want my puppy NOW!!!

Vic Congrats on the addition to your family! She is indeed a beauty and I bet she'll be a lover too! My little shih tzu (11 yo) is a bit shy and so we're holding off getting another one - probably until we lose her.

Kit What a beautiful girl! 60 pounds at 5 months, yup, she's gonna be a big one! My collie just turned a year old and he weights 70 pounds and I thought *he* was big! Congrats on your new baby, have fun!

Jasmine Congragts on the new puppy, she is beautiful. Glad to see you didn't pick a beagle cause those dogs are so stubborn. Don't get me wrong, I have a beagle his name is buddy and his great and all, but those days where he wants to be stubborn is like aahhhhhhhh!!!! especial with a 3 year old and 16 months old in the house. Well have fun with Hexe.

Eileen Congrats! If she is 60 pounds at 5 months then she is probably going to be HUGE! Good luck with feeding her! LOL never having a dog myself I have been enjoying my daughter's golden doodle Daisy. She just turned 1 and she is a hoot. Love her playfulness and energy.

Sharon unfortunately all I see is hair lots and lots of hair! Beautiful hair, but hair ,hair, hair! . Even since we had a Siberian the first thing I think about when I see a dog is...how much will it shed?

Best of luck and fun with her:)and fabulous name!

Cindyg Man she's a beauty...and big...damn I've always wanted a big dog but have stayed with much smaller ones. It's easier to take to grandma's house. Maybe one day when one of us is home more. And a german sheppard is how I'd go. I have a brother in law that raises them. They are a beautiful breed.
Welcome to Wisconsin...I lived here all my life...nice state...
