Bookmarks

Is there some ritual you follow when you read a book? A certain place you go, or beverage you drink, or background music to drown out the world?

I little fun fact about me is I have such a little quirk... I won't read a book unless I have my lucky bookmark... I actually have 2 in fact.

You see my bookmark is not an ordinary bookmark. (No, its not a magic bookmark, no matter how much I wish it was.) During my time in the Army (2006 to be exact) I was deployed to Guatemala. My unit was granted leave at one point and I went with a few buddies to visit a Mayan Temple. It was there that I found my bookmarks. A vender was selling oddities to my fellow soldiers, but nothing really caught my interest. The vender notices the worn copy of "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield, that I held in my hands and the index card I used to hold my place. It was then that he introduced me to my two new reading "buddies". Still to this day I have no idea what he was saying but he handed me two beautiful, woven bookmarks and I have never read a book without them since.

Is there something special about how you read your books? I would lve to hear your stories.

Keep Writing,
J.P. McNeill
