The Importance of Balance
Why do we write? I’m sure the answer to that question differs for each of us. And for some of us, writing simply may not be a passion, perhaps it is reading or running or golf. If I were to ask you (or someone important in your life were to ask you) to give up your most favorite thing, your absolute stress reliever, could you? Would you?
A few weeks ago as I was talking to my son about sacrifices, I got to thinking about all the things we tend to give up at some time or other. Perhaps we give up sugar to lose weight or be healthier. We might give up nights at the gym to be more involved with our kids or spa days because we’ve got family events to go to. Or perhaps we give up everyone else and put ourselves first. The latter option I’ve described is probably the most unlikely and the ideal option for all sides is probably somewhere in the middle.
Most often, we tend to put ourselves last. I know this happens a lot for moms out there but I wouldn’t limit it to only this group. Either way, if you were to describe how you were in this sustain state of sacrifice, what image would you paint with your words? Speaking from my experience, those Snicker’s commercials with the zombie-like monsters is what comes to mind for me. I want to make others happy but I also know myself enough to know that when I am too unhappy or grumpy, I’m not good for anybody.
So why bring this up? Well, I spend a lot of time listening to folks talk about why they can or cannot do something. My take on this is that you can have your cake and eat it. If it comes to making you a happier person that will then make you better to be around, then take the step. Write, read, play the piano, run, etc. Take time for you and if you are worried about consequences or missing out, then meet your family or friends around you half way. Or do things together. Life doesn’t have to be an either or.
Happy writing this week!
