The New Guard – Unsworn Ancient Warriors

In a monastery high in the Carpathian Mountains is a brotherhood of warriors. All they have left is their honor and each other. Unlike many others of their kind who were sent out in the world by their Prince in order to find their lifemates and protect the human race from vampires, they came here to learn how to protect the human race, from themselves. Time would take from them their ability to see in color, and once the pull of the darkness ended, leaving them without emotion, they’d become too dangerous to be among even their own kind, so they sought the monastery.

Carpathian Monastary

These ancient warriors had once sworn fealty to Prince Vlad and felt that Prince had betrayed them. So when a new Prince came they were not quick to swear an allegiance to him. It was the same family. Same blood. The same line that had betrayed the Carpathian people and lead them into the darkest time in their history. There was no reason for them to come out of their self-imprisonment and join the new Prince.
Vlad had known something horrible was coming. He had known his people were about to enter a war. Instead of looking to the protection of his people, Vlad hid a terrible secret and looked only to his own self needs. Vlad’s lifemate, Sarantha had hoped to find a cure for their son’s madness. Draven Dubrinsky was slowly going mad. Draven was dangerous and had he been the son of any other Carpathian, Vladimir would have had him killed to ensure the safety of others. But, Sarantha had held out hope her son could be saved and Vlad hadn’t the heart, or the strength to do what should have been done. Their daughter Noelle also suffered from madness. The Dubrinsky family, for as powerful as they were, seemed cursed. Madness and weakness had, in the eyes of the Ancients, infected the Dubrinsky line and the Prince couldn’t be trusted to do what was best for his people. The Prince’s son and the feelings and desires of the Prince’s lifemate was more important than the Prince’s people. And in that Prince Vlad failed his entire race.
Now the Ancients are the New Guard and they’ve left the monastery in search of the promise of lifemates in various parts of the world. They have lived together for so long it was natural for them to band together and remain close. When they find themselves needed by Tariq in San Diego, California they arrive to find an enemy too dangerous to ignore and their honor demands they remain to protect both humans and Carpathians alike.

Ancient Carpathian Warrior

Will this New Guard ever swear allegiance to Mikhail Dubrinsky? It’s hard to say, but they do stay and fight with Tariq who has pledged his fealty to Mikhail. They’ve not shown any outward disobedience to the Prince, but what happens if Mikhail demands something of them? There are a lot of questions about this New Guard, but in the end there’s no doubt that these warriors are a shield of protection against this new threat and each one an integral part of the future of the Carpathian race.

Adaiah I love this blog! It's now clear to everyone how Vlad's decisions brought forth additional problems, and division to the Carpathian people as a whole. So sad, that Vlad, and Sarantha lost track of what their duties to their people were. What a terrible situation to be in when you have to choose between your people, or your child. This is a no win scenario. Tragic!

In Dark Possession, I'm happy Vlad, and Sarantha were able to make the necessary correction where Draven was concern, and that Monolito was able to make peace with Vlad regarding his family's involvement in planning with the Malinov the downfall of the Dubrinsky lineage. Redemption!

As the New Guard follow Tariq, I hope the ancients remain true in protecting humans, and Carpathian. Tariq may be leader in the US, but he's still willingly serves under the rule of the Prince. I've read the book already, and know who Tariq's second is, and he definitely serves the Prince. :-)

I wondered how many people from the community would come over and read this and comment. I'm so happy you did. Makes writing them feel more important.

It was truly tragic for Mikhail and Sarantha.

I am excited about Tariq's group!

Debra I have read the book, I love the new ancients and understand why they are not sure if they can trust Mikhail. Looking forward to reading more about them.

Janice Just bought Dark Legacy, at Barnes & Noble this morning. Still waiting on my library copy, and the copies I'd prepaid/pre-ordered thru Barnes & Noble.

What happened to the Dubrinsky's was very sad, so you have compassion for them, but Vlad did have an obligation, so you understand why the ancients are hesitant.

Luckily, Tariq is loyal to Mikhail and the ancients follow Tariq.

Slavica I really liked Dark Legacy. What I like About the Carpathian novels is the characters of the Carpathians. These ancient Carpathian males that been introduced in the last 3 books have lived centuries fighting the darkness within them and survived by keeping their integrity intact. They may not pledged their loyalty to the Prince, but they have a code they live by and that is to protect their people, women and children. We can clearly see that in Dark Legacy how they came together when one of their own needed help. I am looking forward to coming books to see how Christine will introduce the rest of the ancients. What thrills and surprises does our beloved Queen has in store for us?

So happy you liked it. It's funny that no one has mentioned the marked absence of Aiden yet. I thought some of the long-time readers might.

I love this "New Guard" and hope people will want their stories. I also am interested in what people will think of the evolution of our villains.

message 9: by Bee (new)

Bee The challenges the Monastery ancients face will bring the Dark Series into a whole new direction. Can't wait to delve into the next one. Which isn't listed yet in the upcoming books dear Christine!!!

message 10: by Debra (new)

Debra I'm wondering what happened to Aiden, has he moved back to the Carpathian mountain or is he dead, but I know I will find out on Friday, it is killing me to wait, but will re read Dark Legacy since read it in 3 hours. Love all your books.

message 11: by Slavica (new)

Slavica Christine, I did not think about Aiden at all. I just want Malinov gone, but I guess they won't be for awhile. I love the ancients and their power, integrity, and discipline. I am hoping we will read more about Joseph in the coming books. You know how dear to my heart he is!

message 12: by Slavica (new)

Slavica Oh NO he is not dead!!!

message 13: by Debra (new)

Debra I don't want him to be, but wondering since he lives there why isn't he with them.

Janice Bought 1 today, and pre-paid for 2. Read 45 pages, and already love it. Have a great day.

message 16: by Janice (new)

Janice I'd love to visit Transylvania, and the Carpathian Mountains during Halloween. I've read that the Carpathian Mountains really do create their own weather.

message 17: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Clayton Loved this blog! Dark Legacy was on my Kindle this morning and it is great to be back with my Carpathian family!

message 18: by Kelley (new)

Kelley White I am really enjoying meeting the ancient warriors. And I think that seeing some of them find their lifemates will give hope to some of the other ancients. I love Tariq as the leader. You threw out some possible hints and I am already anxious for the next book! Is Mikhail going to ask a task of them? The fun of guessing!

I was wondering the same. Last I remember Aiden is up in San Francisco, not sure how big of territories they split up.

On the community, we've discussed Aiden many times. Many of us gave him time to work with Alexandria. In Dark Celebration, Alex was still having trouble adjusting to a new way of life. She always wanted to be successful and provide for her brother, so I thought that Aiden was probably indulging his very young lifemate that has experienced so much tragedy in her young life, But we knew he was still in the Bay area, fighting the good fight. Many of us want to know is Siv related to the Savage brothers.

message 22: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Love this series!! Can't wait to see who the New Guard get as lifemates and how much they throw the guys lives into chaos!

message 23: by Diane (new)

Diane Mason I am so loving the ancients, they cracked me up in this book. Since I was at work earlier I will ask, "what's up with Aiden"? Did he and Alex move back to the Carpathian Mountains? If he was still in the US I would think that he was close enough to hear the call. Will we find out why he hasn't shown up yet? Looking forward to seeing how far the Malinov brothers are going and what it will take to bring them down.

message 26: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Turner I didn't realize there was a need to wonder about Aiden?? He and Alexandria and Joshua had their story in the 3rd book I think? Now I can't wait to read the blog post!!! Should I worry? Ack! Now look what you started!! LOL!

message 27: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Kontos Vald and Sarantha did a great disservice to the Carpthains, Mikhail ordered his brothers death. I understand their relectunce with Mikhail, but they need to understand he's not his father, and he's done everything he can for his people. Yes he has made mistakes, these ancient warriors, are a new twist and I can't wait to see how this all works out, the Malinov brothers need to be sent deep into Hades and never return, there is something wrong with them and their need for power.

message 28: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Maestas Just popped over to read up. I have my copy of Dark Legacy but wont be able to start reading until the weekend(I have a bad habit of starting a book and reading until i finish and the boss frowns on playing hooky cause i stayed up all night reading). I am looking forward to the ancients and their interactions with the less "traditional" lifemates who fight alongside their men....

Kitty Bradford I could not stop reading this book. I have finished my first read and will start the re-read tomorrow. I am loving the ancients and the loyalty they have for one another.

Ps. Can I keep Mataias?

message 31: by Liz (new)

Liz I love the addition of the ancients. Mikhail needs strong warriors who still question everything. He is still my favorite Carpathian😀

message 32: by Annie (new)

Annie Flis I loved this book . I thought the part about "glorified in song" was so funny my husband was sleeping and I just busted up laughing at that I stayed up all night reading that book. It is a now my favorite.

Hoping to see more of Ivory and Razvan in the future.

I agree Adaiah. It's very clear why and how Vlad let his people down!!

message 40: by Yogi (new)

Yogi Rogers I loved this book and especially the humor that was completely unexpected between the ancient monastery warriors. Sandu seems to start it all talking about his black witch moth having a wing span of 7 inches. That led to Ferro insisting he needed to keep his wing span a little bigger because 9 inches was closer to his actual size. Andor joined in with his 10 inch wing span and then Benedik with his 12 inch.
I guess size really matters....even to Carpathians!
I'm hoping the next book is Sandu's. A~GoA

message 41: by Stefano (new)

Stefano Ferraro I love love love them all. I play a role on an rp site.....Ivory.....So the books the Malinovs are in are very dear to me.
Got mine today but will be finished by Friday! And then read all 31 again waiting on the next.
I've got this whole series. The entire Leopard series and the Shadow series..... Working on the rest.
Ms Christine......I LOVE EVERYTHING you write. Please keep it up!

message 42: by Bridgett (new)

Bridgett I spent release date reading so now i can catch up with the communities.

I love this book with all of the ancients, both with sworn allegiance and without. I enjoyed seeing what Tariq first began turning into a fortress, a command center. I thoroughly enjoyed the communication from the Prince about Tariq having a second. I think this was smart as Vlad and Sarantha did mess up, puting emotion and children before the good of the whole and his visions of the future. Oh, it is terrible the position Vlad was in. The proverbial rock and hard place right there. I don't envy the decision he had to make, but screw up he did. I like seeing the ancients group together, begin forming unity even over joking about being made into a song!

message 43: by Caterina (new)

Caterina Leistikow I loved this book so much, and the new ancients. I hope that maybe one day they will all swear allegiance to Mikhail, but I do understand why they are weary of him. I can't wait to read more about them.
