On The Road—And On The Shelves by Stacy Hoff

I just got back from my summer vacation. I went with my family to Saratoga Springs, New York. We went for fun, food and frolic. But I also went there to say “hi” to some important people—people who have supported me, and the romance I wrote about Saratoga horse racing, JOCKEYING FOR YOU.

I am proudly published by an indie press (Soul Mate Publishing, Inc. ). Yet books published by small presses  have a harder time getting onto physical book shelves then “the big guys.” That’s why I was so excited to see JOCKEYING on the shelves of my favorite indie bookstore, Northshire Bookstore Saratoga. (By the way, I spend a lot of money there buying whatever books will inspire my non-bookloving kid to actually read. Money very well spent, IMHO.)

I have to thank Northshire for their wonderful support. I guess indie booksellers like supporting indie authors. How cool is that? Just another reason in my book (pun intended) to shop at indie book retailers.

I got another thrill at Saratoga, too. I saw my book on the shelves of HatSational, an amazing indie retailer of the most beautiful derby hats I’ve ever seen. Back when I was writing jockeying I walked into HatSational completely mesmerized by their collection. So much so, I asked them about how they make hats.

What I learned about hat making, I included in JOCKEYING. I acknowledge HatSational store owner Joyce Locks (pictured above) in JOCKEYING for her kindness and time. And now I can thank her—again—for selling the book she (unknowingly) helped me write.
