A Darker Slant - good or not?!

So I'm really hitting a wall with Ryan's story. It's not him right now, surprisingly, but the fact that the story is darker than I had planned. I keep trying to find a way to lighten it, but it doesn't seem to be happening. And seeing as I like writing light-hearted stories, this is unusual.

I had this same problem when I wrote Shattered Soul (book 18 of my sci-fi series), it was really dark and I had problems. The only way I finally finished it was by embracing the story and just going with it.

So my decision now is - do I scrap three whole chapters of Ryan's story and restart with a different slant to make it lighter? Or do I embrace the serious side and go with it? ARGH!

I admit, I lean more towards going with the story as it is and see where it goes. It's taking a turn I hadn't expected, the heroine is not the usual girl I write, her actions unexpected. Her motives and experiences...it's just different. She's a tough cookie, that's all I'll say right now about her!

So yeah, I think I'm just going to continue forging on and see where Ryan and his girl lead me.

Sometimes the pathways aren't always so clear!!

amanda Yes! I don't mind with a wee bit darker story than your usual fwuffy romance, Angie! If it's me, I'd go with the flow and see how it goes, plus you can also refresh your style of writing. I'm really excited to see how it goes for you!

Thanks Amanda. Generally my books, I like to think, leave everyone smiling and feeling good. Adam's Thorn was more serious, that's probably the most serious I've gone with the 'fwuffy' romances. ROTFL I love that 'fwuffy'! Makes me feel all cuddly and warm ;-) But I think Ryan's story will be more serious. It's going to be hard to tell until I go further. But, oh well...here goes!!!

Never Stop Reading or Dreaming i think a darker story will be interesting. I'm excited for whatever comes out.

Debbie Angela go with your gutt feeling. Ryan is a mystery man and if it has to be a little darker to get his story out then so be it. I am sure we will love it. Debbie

Ah Debbie, thanks. I'm going with the gut feeling. The heroine...I have to be careful to ensure she's still likeable!

Angela Verdenius Ooohh - got a great cat in there!!! What? You're not surprised, right? Gotta have a cat pop up somewhere!!

Mona Lewis Ryan himself is a darker character I don't think it would feel right for him to be too light and happy. You expect him to be dark. I think you should just follow where he leads you. I would be disappointed if his story wasn't a bit darker. It would not be true to his character. Hang in there, he'll turn out like he's meant to.

Kim Go with it. Each character has their own story to tell, some are dark and that's ok. Your writting will smooth it out and lead them to a much deserved happily ever after.

Thanks Mona. I'm now on chapter 3 and the story is going along a pathway I'm not so sued to, so it's a learning curve for me, too!

Angela Verdenius Everyone, I just want to thank you all for your support & encouragement while I take this journey with Ryan and his heroine. It's nice to know there're people who understand that sometimes everything can't be roses or funny all the time. But he WILL have his HEA, that is a definite fact!

Wait a darn minute, if writing a slightly serious book like Adam's Thorn got you, well, Adam's Thorn, thEN WRITE A SERIOUS ONE, ANGIEEE ashdkdngslnslgnr!!! I love Adam's Thorn!!!!! I read it back in 2014 and by far it's one of my favorite! 5 STARS!!! I always love it when the Hero and heroine are enemies. That's why, seriously Angie, your books got me goin'. The best authors that featured BBW in the story? YOUUU!
Now Ryan.. I haven't read Aaron yet, so I don't think I've met Ryan. But if you think Ryan could be your 'serious book' one, then go for it! We're all rooting for you!!! And of course you have to put fwuffy cats next to Ryan, we don't want him all lonely and sad, right? No fwuffy and cuddwy cats = 4ever sadness.

LOL - thanks, Amanda! I guess, thinking about it, Adam's Thorn was kind of serious. It's just Ryan is...well, Ryan. And the heroine is...well... ;-) What they've been through... I will do my best to do justice to them both!
And oh yeah, there's a cat. There's ALWAYS a cat! He's not fwuffy or cuddwy as such, he's a battered old tom, but he's got attitude!

I say that while Evie is rolling in front of me on the desk, touching the screen and making me rewrite a few words now and again LOL.
