If we must measure ourselves, let it be against this man. Let us learn of endurance, of grace, of compassion and understanding from what he taught, from what he embodied, not effortlessly, no, but full of effort and strife. Let us learn of patience by his example, of resistance from his peaceful refusal to acquiesce to the tide of hatred and racism, bigotry and prejudice, the tide that had already washed across the world and drowned so many in its wake.
