Starting a blog.

Hi, I'm Laurence (goes by Laury) Dahners and I write science fiction. I've mostly published on Amazon since I love the Kindle. A lot of readers communicated with me and other readers on the Amazon Author's Forums, but those don't seem to be getting much support any more and there have been a lot of complaints.

So I thought I'd start a blog here on GoodReads as well as responding to "Ask the Author" questions that are posted on this site.

I'm not sure how well this will work for those of you who like to have discussions that don't necessarily involve me? Let me know if you're aware of a way for me to facilitate such discussion that I may not be aware of.

Hope this works for at least some of you who like to express your opinions!

message 152: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Kevin, next book sometime in July, taking too many vacations!
I am retired and it's awesome, Saturday every day.
KU certainly has a lot of readers! Many more than I expected (don't know what I was thinking) and many more than I gave up by having to drop other publishers to put the books on KU.

Kevin Harrison Any eta on next book said be july?

message 154: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Dang,
I went on another vacation (can you take a vacay from being retired?) and didn't get much done for a couple of weeks.
So, I haven't quite finished it and it still needs a lot of editing. Probably late July.
Hope you guys like it when it's done.

Laury D

George S T Humphries Which saga will it cover?

message 156: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners George,
Still working on the Hyllis family stories.

Hope you like it too.

Laurence Dahners Just letting you know that
"Sisters (a Hyllis family story #6)"
is available for pre-order on Amazon.

For those of you who read on Kindle Unlimited, it'll be up there a week or so later so the people who like to get books on other platforms can get it through Smashwords.com before it becomes exclusive to Amazon.

I hope you like it!

message 164: by Dan (new)

Dan Yes, I would have to say you are my top sci-fi author. David Weber held that spot for a very long time, but in the last couple of years, you have taken that top spot.

I think your stories (Donsaii series) just seem a bit more real to me. I really like how you are right on the cutting edge of current science. I don't think it will be many more years before we do have self driving cars and limited AI's for everyone. I also wouldn't be surprised to see quantum entangled communications become a reality. I certainly hope that the quantum entangled ports don't stay in science fiction.

I hope it won't take a few hundred years, as I would like to see it in my lifetime, but I think we will eventually find a way around that pesky speed of light limitation and get to the stars. I think our progress in biology will eventually give us a solution to our telomere issues, and we will need a way around that light speed limit in order to get out of this system before we collapse from population pressures. Hopefully, we will not be a scourge on the galaxy, such as your aliens in the Vaz series.

I also love that you get your books out relatively quick without letting the quality of your writing suffer. It is extremely rare to see a typo or grammatical error in your works.

I've really enjoyed the TeeCee's, so would love to see an eventual meeting between them and Earthlings. (Not one were we end up exploiting or doing something evil to them) Don't know how you'd get the science to sound plausible, but if Donsaii found a way to cross universal barriers with her ports, I'm sure that she and Vaz could do great things together. El and Tiona could figure out if the thrusters are really interacting with Dark Matter.

Those are just a couple of things that I've dreamed up and wouldn't be disappointed to see in your stories. However, even if those things never happen, I'll still be avidly reading anything you publish. You have a great talent for telling tales that really hook someone into the story. I'm sure you would have been an excellent bard in prehistoric times.

Keep up the great work!

Laurence Dahners Dan.
Thanks!
Feels great to be included in David Weber's category.
I loved his early Honor stories.
Laury

message 166: by Kevin Harrison (new)

Kevin Harrison David Weber, John Ringo, and Tom Kartman were my top author, but don't come close to the out put or cost of tge new breed of independent authors. You, Michael Chatfield, Mackey Chandler, NC Reed, and Peter Grant now my top 5.

message 167: by Kevin Harrison (new)

Kevin Harrison another plus with your work is you series don't go dry. Weber Honor series started to drop. i haven even tried the last few. John Ringo seams to be in a dry spell. and Kratman too so long for his last book i started checking if he died. so happy to see his book out paid $15.00 ARC. Afterwards felt cheated 6 year wait and could of bought 3 or more of my favorites authors that are just as good

message 168: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Kevin,
Thanks!

message 169: by Tyson (last edited Jul 23, 2019 12:54PM) (new)

Tyson Yea if I made a list, you might very well take the top spot as well. You might have to compete with Brandon Sanderson (fantasy not sci fi). Sanderson would win if he could put out more books faster. I think I'm starting to prefer shorter books every few months rather then huge epic books every few years. As it is, you would probably take top spot.

message 170: by Laurence (last edited Sep 21, 2019 03:00AM) (new)

Laurence Dahners I read a Sanderson for a book club and thought it was way, way too long. I much prefer shorter books myself.

Kevin Harrison didn't he take over for Robert Jordan wheel of time series? that and the David Weber series with Honor were my favorite. however both started to fell flat or not wrap up. Also Frank Herbert Dune was a favorite. Love to read the series again but hat to pay $10 for book ive read half a dozen times over the years. before you went to kindle unlimited i keep skipping your donsaii because there were so many figure break my book budget. Got a gift card as a gift and then started the series. so right had to buy then one after another. i plan to buy your new because now have them all so a few bucks a month not a big dint like the complete set. so glad your kindle unlimited now dont have to warn people when i recommend you. Before i say he gives you the first one free like a drug dealer, but like any drug cant stop. Be ready toi buy all ten books now up to 15.

message 172: by Tyson (last edited Jul 23, 2019 07:09PM) (new)

Tyson Yes he did finish the Wheel of Time. That was my second fanasy series that I read back when I was only about 13 years old. I loved it. The final 3 books which were writen by Sanderson were my favorite. So excited about the coming TV show.

I love long books if they are really good. The longer, the better if I could read without waiting long for more. But if I need to reread every time a new book comes out simply because its been so long, and then after its done, I know it's gonna be a few years b4 the next book. I was happy when i could read 13 Wheel of Time books b4 having to wait for the final installment, but if its a decade or more of waiting, it gets old.

Dan Kevin Harrison wrote: "didn't he take over for Robert Jordan wheel of time series? that and the David Weber series with Honor were my favorite. however both started to fell flat or not wrap up. "

Kevin, those two were my fave authors for about 20 years or so. I immediately bought their items in hardcover as soon as they were published. I finally stopped when hardcovers hit $35. I started reading both of them in the early 90's. I'd buy the Jordan books every October, until he got sick and took a few years between each one. The last few Weber books have been disappointing. I've read some of Sanderson's stuff, and I thought Warbreaker was extremely well done. I am also looking forward to seeing how the tv show turns out. I just hope it doesn't get cancelled before the full story is told.

I've been getting my fantasy fix from Garon Whited lately. A bit of a mixture of scifi and fantasy. Check out the first book in his Nightlord series, Sunset.

Laury, I prefer a long story that I can really immerse myself in. That is what I really like about your writing, even though they are shorter than my usual reads. I really get engrossed in them. I've been really impressed with your follow through on your "what if" propositions. What if tiny wormholes were possible? What if there was a field that suppressed static charge? What if telekinesis was real? What if I could psychically suppress your realization that I was right in front of you? In each story, you have consistently and believably explored the possibilities that each of those questions open up. Once I've suspended my disbelief for that one thing, your stories hang together and your characters are engaging. I care about what happens to them. (I really felt bad for Tarc when Lizeth rejected him.) I am always disappointed when I get to the end of the book. You've left me hungry for more in just about every story you've written. I will admit that I didn't really like the transmuter's daughter at first. I thought she was an idiot for going into the mine alone. I'm not really sure if there's any more you could do in that storyline, but I am looking forward to more Proton Field, Blindspot, and Vaz books.

I can't remember for sure, but I got the first Donsaii book on KU or it was free, or really discounted. I ziipped through it. Was really irritated that the second wasn't on KU, but the story was so good that I just kept going. I'll be buying all your books, even though you are on KU now. I've got to support my favorite author. Can't wait until they are all on audible as well.

message 177: by Kevin Harrison (new)

Kevin Harrison Dan i agree there short and the ending just comes so damm quick. the last few im so into the book surprised when i hit the end. However their just so damm good, but there coming out quicker. we just need larry to stay off the beaches with drinks with umbrellas. HaHaHa. So no more vacations larry :)...im joking. i thought was a great idea just to first book on Kindle Unlimited. Reminded me how i found David Webber before ebooks. First honor book was special addition from Bean books $1.99 could not buy at that price. I figure they both use the drug dealer sales book. Give them first taste free and they will come back for more. So I've live it with "I'm Kevin and I'm a Larry Dahners addict"

message 178: by Walter (new)

Walter I am the opposite. One of the things I like about his books is that they are shorter. I pretty much stopped reading David Weber because his books were running 700+ pages.

message 179: by Cgr710 (new)

Cgr710 I've stopped reading most of Weber's books because he got long-winded, repetitive and inconsistent. Too bad, his books were nice readings...

message 180: by Muehe (new)

Muehe Sisters it was a good read.
Laury, you might want to ignore the next part. I am just running my mouth off. You just keep writing stories. : )

Some thoughts on the book. I felt like the writing style changed and the character list has grown. Which I kind of understand, you can not have the same person being the hero over and over again. But I get lost in the names. I can read a book, and really enjoy it, but when I am done I could tell you about the story and not once refer to the MC by name. It is like I remember everything by relationship to the MC. So that new guy healer – he is Tarc’s Mother’s Sister’s Son. The other three, 2 girls and a jerk. Or was it 3 girls.

Weber,
I like his early stuff.
Path of the Fury
The Apocalypse Troll
Honor Harrington - I think I stopped in the low teens and the last few were only because I did not want to give up on him.

I think he grew as a writer, but he lost his fan base.

message 181: by Kevin Harrison (new)

Kevin Harrison sister was good, more of the healing than action, but looks like it's coming in the next with a trip to the old village. if i recommend right plan to work on another series next. can you give us any eta and whats do out

message 182: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Kevin,
Probably 2-3 months (as usual) for the 7th Hyllis family book. Then about the same for the next Donsaii.
I'm not so good on the planning and never have deadlines. The books are done whenever I think I've told the story.
Laury
PS, glad you seem to like them!

message 183: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Hey,

For you fans of audiobooks, Rocket (an Ell Donsaii story #4)
is out on Audible
https://www.audible.com/search?keywor...
(it'll be at the bottom of the page).

It should be on Amazon and iTunes within 48 hrs.

Hope you like it!

message 184: by Joe (new)

Joe Kwok So when's comet coming out? Lol or the rest of books? Seriously how ling does it usually take to do a book? I can't wait i got all the books and I'll get all the audio book too lol. Sometimes i read sometimes i listen. Thanks for your hard work! It's a good escape for a couple of hours, when i need it. Lol

message 185: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Joe,
Laura's started on Comet already. It takes about 1-2 months for her to do a book, then a few more weeks for ACX to approve it.

Laury

message 186: by Joe (new)

Joe Kwok Thanks mr. dahners! I'm rereading from rickets again! Lol seems everytime a new audio book i pick up where it leaves off by reading the books from the audio. Lol also i think it's time for Zage to have a sibling! Lol just a thought. Great work! Thanks

Read Terraform. Ell is pregnant.

message 188: by Joe (new)

Joe Kwok I know I'm just saying enough of this sisters stuff! Lol it's time for zage and his sibling! Lol

message 189: by Muehe (new)

Muehe I like Zage, and he left off in a good spot to help cure people. That will be good.

But Vaz and his family just fought off aliens. If nothing else we get a space boon when they build the defense force. But i am hoping that his daughter asks Vaz to design an explorer ship with the new space drive. Or we could just fast forward a few years and his daughter is taking the first new explorer for a test drive.

Has it really been 3 years since the last Vaz ?

message 190: by Joe (new)

Joe Kwok Lol i asked mr. dahners about vaz and that series he said it's on the back burner no plans for now. I loved that one too. Lol i wonder if he's gonna do anything with the iridium series good start there too. But i still come back to zage that series is soo set with the kids and ell both doing things! Although I'm hopibg that torc would like become a traveling sheriff/healer almost like a road angel! Lol but like i said enough of the sisters stuff! More zage and vaz! Lol

message 191: by Clay (new)

Clay Boyd I’ve been reading Science Fiction for over 60 years. My wife asked me why I like it... I told her it’s not about the science, it’s about the people!!!
Laury is one of my favorite authors. He’s very prolific (which is good, ‘cause I’m a really fast reader ;-(
I love each of his SERIES... and have read them multiple times. When I was younger, I NEVER read a book more than once. Now, I can suspend disbelief and enjoy them again and again.
Another book that you might like is “Temporary Duty” by Rick Locke (sp??).
BTW, I have purchased all the books the Laury has written...
Thank you Laury... This is SO MUCH FUN!!!
Clay

Unfortunately Rick Locke passed away in 2012 while working on a sequel. Another good author falling victim to cancer was William Zellmann - his books are still available on Amazon.

message 194: by Walter (new)

Walter After re-reading the Hyllis series and then the Blindspot series, I noticed that Roni Buchry (Blindspot) has some of the powers that Kazy Hyllis (Hyllis). Do you think Roni might have the rest of Kazy's powers? Also, based mainly on the Author's Afterword, Hax Buchry (Blindspot) might have a very weak version of Kazy's powers.

message 196: by Rachael (new)

Rachael I don't know if I missed it but I am very surprised that no one mentioned the thing I find most astonishing about Ell's abilities. Not her speed, strength, acuracy or intellect which are things we already have but are expanded in Ell. The big difference about Ell is her perfect muscle memory. Every skill she aquires, she retains without needing to practice constantly. What a time saver. Imagine working hard to master something and then being able to immediately move on to something exciting and new without losing what you have worked so hard for. Keeping past skills without effort would allow people to expand themselves in unheard of ways. An eidetic memory for the body. Is there any science behind this?

message 197: by Reuben (new)

Reuben James what are you writing now?

message 198: by Tyson (new)

Tyson Hey Mr. Dahners. Its not really like you to remain quiet this long. I hope you are doing ok and didn't have much trouble with Dorian.

message 199: by Muehe (new)

Muehe Lol,
One of my favorite authors only puts out 1 book ever 2 years. The last time he updated his blog was back in February.

But yeah, where is he? He better not be sick. Not allowed. Now if he is on vacation recharging, that is allowable.

message 200: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Hmmm,
Goodreads stopped updating me when you guys post comments so I hadn't seen what you'd written until this morning when I got on to post that

Comet (an Ell Donsaii story #5) is now available on Amazon and Audible. It should be available on iTunes in a day or two.

Reuben, I'm almost done with the seventh Hyllis story

Rachael, No science for that one, but somethings do just seem to come back to some/most people ("it's like riding a bike") though not to high performance levels. I like to think Ell would be better at that too.

Walter, I'm gonna have to get back to the Blindspot stories sometime...

Thanks everyone for your interest
Laury Dahners
