Starting a blog.

Hi, I'm Laurence (goes by Laury) Dahners and I write science fiction. I've mostly published on Amazon since I love the Kindle. A lot of readers communicated with me and other readers on the Amazon Author's Forums, but those don't seem to be getting much support any more and there have been a lot of complaints.

So I thought I'd start a blog here on GoodReads as well as responding to "Ask the Author" questions that are posted on this site.

I'm not sure how well this will work for those of you who like to have discussions that don't necessarily involve me? Let me know if you're aware of a way for me to facilitate such discussion that I may not be aware of.

Hope this works for at least some of you who like to express your opinions!

I am curious, what is the next book: Ell, Vaz, or Hyllis ?

message 104: by Cgr710 (new)

Cgr710 Cool! Any tentative publishing date?

message 105: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Absolutely, I'll publish it when it's done. Sorry to say I don't know when that'll be. Usually 3-4 months, though it was almost 5 months on the last one.

Laury

message 108: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners K,
Since I'm not working to deadlines, I'm never sure. "When it's done's the best answer I can give.
So far it's been going faster than usual.

Joe Kwok Mr. Dahners. Any news on the next book, and what are your plan for Zage in the future books, spinoff perhaps?!?! Lol!

message 111: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Getting close to finishing the writing... unfortunately, then there's the editing...

Joe Kwok Hi mr. Dahners, I've been wondering how much of your science in the books are real? Also in your last book, if zage was real and he actually came up with herpes caused alzheimer's and he came up with the possible cure, who would get the credit? I understand hes working under Regina Barnes authority snd the professor in charge so wiukd they share credit or he'd just get a small part. I think if someone actually came up with whst Zage did he'd be up for anither Nobel prize no?

message 113: by Laurence (last edited Feb 11, 2019 04:43AM) (new)

Laurence Dahners Joe,
Obviously the "what ifs" aren't real, but then as the story evolves from the what if, I try to keep the science as real as I can. There is some evidence that Alzheimer's may result from herpes infections, so I guess you'd have to say that one's partly real in that someday we may learn that herpes is the (or one of the) cause. It's hard to have a researcher character doing cutting edge research when we actually know the answers to the questions they're researching, so there I'm limited to stories that "might" be correct by what we know today. A news story out today is suggestion that transmissible prions (protein folding agents) are responsible.
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/...

You'd hope that credit would be given to the people who made scientific contributions but obviously there is some point where someone may have made a minor contribution that's not worthy and deciding the cutoff can be difficult. There are a number of instances where a junior (or associated) researcher made a major contribution to a Nobel worthy project and either got or didn't get credit for it. Watson and Crick famously didn't give Rosalind Franklin credit in their discovery of DNA (but it's nice that the new European Mars lander has been named after her!)

Laury Dahners

message 114: by Joe (new)

Joe Kwok Thanks! Mr Dahners. You write the science in your story so realistic, lol, i guess that's why your the author! It seems to be a crappy situation for the grad student or undergrad student, but in Zages case he really didnt tell Dr Barnes his protein or peptide did he? Lol well I'm eagerly waiting for the next book in Zages exploits! Thanks for your time!

Laurence Dahners A new book in the Hyllis family series is available for pre-order

Hope you like it!

I've reduced the pre-order price from the usual $3.99 for the faithful among you who buy early. (If you already found it and bought it for $3.99, Amazon says they'll still only charge you $3.49

Telepath(a Hyllis family story #4)
https://www.amazon.com/Telepath-Hylli...

“Telepath” is the fourth in a series of stories featuring the members of the Hyllis family. After a plague induced apocalypse which resulted in the collapse of civilization and reduced mankind back to iron and horsepower this family

tends to inherit “talents.”

Eva Hyllis and her ancestors became healers because their talents let them feel inside their patients. This helps them diagnose the underlying causes of many illnesses. Having made a diagnosis, sometimes they can do something. Unfortunately, they often cannot.

However, Eva’s children Tarc and Daussie have inherited telekinetic and teleportation talents. Telekinetic pressure can stop bleeding and teleportation can remove stones and atherosclerotic plaque.

In this book, they realize their young cousin Kazy’s a telepath! Tarc realizes his girlfriend Lizeth’s a precog… just before she breaks up with him.

Now they’re rapidly finding more and more medical conditions that their talents allow them to treat. And, they discover an ancient, undisturbed medical facility which promises more equipment and knowledge.

Perhaps now Eva’s long held dream to teach and practice medicine full time might become possible?

message 117: by Tyson (new)

Tyson Looking forward to reading Telepath. I'll probably skip the first 2 books and only read book 3 to refresh my memory on the series before jumping into book 4 though.

Any decision about which series you are working on next?

message 118: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Tyson,
I got really excited about some new possibilities I recognized for Daussie's teleportation so I've already started on Hyllis #5. Hope it turns out well.

Tyson I just started reading Telepath. I just now realized that although the sun is millions of degrees at its hottest parts, the core of the earth is 10000 degrees F and only 4000 miles down compared to the sun being 93 million miles away. I'd think the earths core would be a few orders of magnitude easier to sense then the sun.

message 122: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Tyson,
Interesting thought. I hope I can think how to work it into the next story.

message 123: by Wicked (new)

Wicked Was rereading the Ell Donsaii series and thought about computers. One of the biggest slow downs and heat issues is the amount wiring and sending info from processor to data banks and so on. So what about Ell building her own but instead of wiring she can set up pgr routes instead of wires. Less heat. Faster processing. More information bus speed. She could build a computer 1000x better than what she uses for Allen. Just a thought.

Tyson Wicked wrote: "Was rereading the Ell Donsaii series and thought about computers. One of the biggest slow downs and heat issues is the amount wiring and sending info from processor to data banks and so on. So what..."

Very little technical information is given about computers in the Ell Donsaii books. They are obviously better then modern computers though. There is no reason to suspect that they haven't already done as you suggest. It simply isn't too important to the plot to mention how the computers are improved. Especially since the computers aren't underpowered to begin with. Ell even has quantum computer chips attached to her AI.

message 125: by Tyson (new)

Tyson Ok I just finished reading Telepath so spoiler warning here. I guess this is kind of a spoilery review.

This story was different from the other 3 Hyllis Family books in that there is no real villain in it like there was in the others. From book 3 going into 4, the story feels like it plateaus without many up's or down's until the end of Telepath. What surprised me a bit was revealing Lisbeth might have some kind of ability herself and then her leaving. I kind of expect more there but on the other hand, I really hate love triangles and if she came back into the story, there is a chance of that happening. While I didn't like Lizbeth leaving though, I didn't hate it either. I was always luke warm on Tarc and Lizbeth's relationship.

message 126: by Muehe (new)

Muehe Finished Telepath, good read. Thanks.

Now for the important stuff. What's next ?
P.s. I am rooting for Vaz.

message 127: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Muehe,

So excited about the ideas I've thought of for the Hyllises that I've started writing another of those.

Laury Dahners

message 128: by Muehe (last edited Mar 04, 2019 02:16PM) (new)

Muehe Well if your muse is whispering Hyllises , then Hyllises it is.
I look forward to reading it.

But next time she is whispering, ask her about Vaz.

message 129: by Ed (new)

Ed Gomaz Finished Telepath pretty quick. Really enjoyed it and found myself wanting more. I seems like you a lot of possibilities up ahead. Maybe trouble from the Baron, or a war between two territories looking to claim the hospital or Lizbeth deciding that Tarc and the Hyllises are a bunch of witches and comes to chase them out. Can't wait to see where this goes.

message 130: by Reup (new)

Reup Mr Danhers
it looks like you removed all your books from smashwords except the Donsaii series

as I am not on amazon, I was hoping to buy the book there, as I usually do

will you work with smashword again soon ?

message 131: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Reup,
I have to be off Smashwords for 90 days once I go exclusive with Amazon. If you'll email me directly at ldahners@gmail.com we can work something out.

Jon F In the Hyllis universe coins are used. Are the Hyllis universe coins re-melted and cast, or are the old pe-1964 dimes, quarters, halves, and silver dollar being used?

I think the Hyllis series has the potential to pass the Ell Donsaii series in books issued.

Jon

message 135: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Jon,
I haven't given it that much thought. In my mind they're using some standard weight of copper, silver and gold (which at times have each been worth 100X the previous) so that's my conversion scale. Since there weren't large quantities of pre 64 coins available I'm assuming someone's making them.
Hyllis vs Donsaii? I'm thinking that I'm going to finish two more Hyllis books before I move on to something else, but we'll have to see.
Laury Dahners

message 136: by Muehe (new)

Muehe Jon,

Quit trying to influence Dahners with thoughts of wealth.
He needs to concentrate on his best works: Ell, Vaz and then Hyllis
After all, it is all about the art.

bwahaha!

message 137: by Tyson (new)

Tyson So you are saying you might write Hyllis #6 right after Hyllis #5? How's Hyllis 5 coming along?

Mostly written, still a lot of editing though.

Tyson I just saw that you got all your books on kindle unlimited. I am starting to really like KU myself, although I wonder if it doesn't cut into the income with less people buying full price. I'm curious, does the quantity of readers increase enough with KU to make up the money.

message 142: by Wicked (new)

Wicked they get paid by the page i believe when its through KU so every time its read he gets money for it

message 143: by Ed (new)

Ed Gomaz Just pre ordered the new Hyllis book #5 Psychicians out May 3rd. Looking forward to it.

message 144: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners For those of you who like to get a jump on things,
Psychicians, a Hyllis family story #5
is available for pre order on Amazon.

It'll be available for regular orders on May 3rd.

For those of you who like to buy through other vendors, it'll be available on those on or about May 3rd for a week, then it'll go off the other vendors so it can go up on Kindle Unlimited (for those of you with KU accounts)

Hope you like it!

message 145: by Muehe (new)

Muehe I finished the newest Hyllis, i enjoyed reading it.
Two things, can you really put glass in the eyes. I was thinking something that small might shatter easy. But then I am not a glass guy. The other, the mind thing. It just seems like that would be an easy out for any problem they run in to.
Anyway, keep up the good work

message 146: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Muehe,
Thanks for the comments!
Putting glass in the eye shouldn't cause a problem. Ophthalmologists put acrylic lenses in eyes all the time. Glass is brittle but by the time you hit the eye hard enough to break the glass, the eye itself would be destroyed.
The problem with writing about powers such as telepathy, even when you're talking about weak ones like Kazy's (can't do her telepathy over much distance, has to be very close, i.e. within 1 meter, to put people to sleep). that you're right it makes a lot of problems they might run into easy to solve. That's why superhero stories have to have superbadguys. But I'm trying to write stories about good people with powers and what they could do. I tried to give them limited powers so that they wouldn't be "super" but I'm finding that they're still pretty super. Maybe I've painted myself into a corner?
Laury Dahners

message 147: by Tyson (new)

Tyson Are you continuing with Hyllis #6 or are you writing something else now? Haven't read Hyllis 5 yet. Money has been tight so I'm doing everything I can to save money, so I'm waiting for it on KU.

message 148: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Working on #6.
5 should be out on KU next week.
Thanks for being patient.

message 149: by Joe (new)

Joe Kwok KU? Im lost which book is that? Lol i though i got every book you published.
My mom just got a cataract removed, it was from this book that i learned that they replaced what they took out. Lol it's sad i know, but i always knew they remived stuff but it never occured to have to put something back, plus the choice of lenses that they niw have is great. I can honestly say i kind of calmed me and i was able to explain to my mom how the operation would work, lol thanks!

message 150: by Laurence (new)

Laurence Dahners Joe,
Glad you liked it and found it helpful.
KU is Kindle Unlimited. Its Amazon's book subscription service where you pay $10/month and read as many KU books as you want. Authors have to take their books off of everything but Amazon to put them on KU so I put them on other distributors for a while, then take them off the other distributors so they can be on KU.
Hope that helps.
Laury Dahners
