Review of the Guardian of the Seventh Realm Series Parts 1 and 2

Prophecy of the Guardian

Synopsis:

The Second Great War between the Light and the Dark has begun, and Abaddon the Demon Lord is searching for the four ancient Wizard Crystals of the Elements.

Once the Crystals are in his hands, and corrupted to evil, he will destroy the forces of Light upon the earth, and transform the world into eternal darkness.

But Darshun Luthais, one of the last Nasharin warriors, along with a few companions, sets out on a quest to find the Crystals first. Along the journey they encounter giant six-legged serpents, the ruthless Cullach, and other entities of darkness; yet the most challenging obstacle is Darshun's constant struggle against temptations of evil, and his vow to hold to the faith of all who are calling him the Guardian—the prophesied warrior who will bring down the Demon Lord.

Siege of Darkness

Synopsis:

Tragedy strikes Zithel, and the city of monks goes up in flames. The Earth-Wizard Mazarian has disappeared, and the army of Asgoth has taken back the Wizard Crystals of the Elements, ready to deliver them into the hands of their master: the Demon Lord Abaddon, where they will be corrupted and used against the very elements they were created to protect, deforming the world to a blackened void. As Darshun Luthais—the chosen Guardian of earth—emerges from the mystical Shajin Island, having completed his training, ready to combat the forces of evil, he not only finds himself in the center of this chaos, but is also torn in different directions. Part of him longs to obey the wisdom of the Elders by relocating the crystals and fleeing Asgoth, while his Nasharin nature thirsts for battle, eager to take on the many trials that stand in his way, keeping him from what he desires most, challenging Abaddon, the ultimate terror.

Parts 1 and 2 Overall:

Overall, I will not give this series a star rating because to do so would be unfair and inadequate. If I were to give a star rating, it would have to be unfairly low in regards to the content errors though I deeply enjoyed the story and were I to give a star rating based solely on the storyline, it would be inadequately high and I fear that you would not seek to improve your craft. You have an enormous amount of raw and unpolished talent for you can create the story but you seem a little too impatient to follow through with the hard work. The writing is easy by comparison to the rest.

On a more personal note, J.W. Baccaro I can honestly say there is NO substitute for proof reading. Do not rely on spell check for I can name numerous examples in your work that fairly scream "spell check" and nothing else and while a word may be spelled correctly, it may be wrong in context. Proof read, proof read and proof read again and you will find what it is about which I speak. I've pointed this out to several other people in my life as well for example, a friend who wrote a small piece and only did a spell check and I pointed out to this friend that the word "moth" was spelled correctly and was missed by spell check when the word he wished to use was "month" which changed the entire meaning of the sentence and made it grammatically incorrect.

I also would like to see your future works improve descriptively for I felt somewhat disappointed that the stories were not longer and more in-depth as far as the more mundane descriptions were concerned. You devoted much time and attention to the descriptions of fighting and less to character development which would have made the story more enriching and enjoyable and while I can understand action packed battle sequences, I also felt like the characters fell flat when they weren't fighting.

The characters also had a happy go lucky quality that seemed out of place in the aftermath of battle and were very quick to form happy alliances when it seemed that diplomacy and delicacy would have been better suited to the actual plot of the work. The main character was somewhat out of place in development too for while he seemed to want to display humility it was completely out of character when coupled with what seemed to me to be no small amount of megalomania. I felt torn between wanting to believe he was a strong character full of noble intentions and wondering if he was ever going to realize that he was servant of the world you were creating and not the other way around. He seemed somewhat bi-polar or manic depressive to me.
