I became enamored with Ryan Adams when
Heartbreaker, his first solo effort outside of Whiskeytown, was released. It quickly became one of my favorite CDs. Sparsely produced, raw, and honest, it's a gem. His follow up record,
Gold, while retaining much of that honesty, is much more produced, and that might be to the collection's detriment. The songs are not the quiet gestures and pleas of
Heartbreaker either. Sure. There are a few here, but on
Gold Adams kicks the Americana rock into full gear. S
