Internet Pirates In Hạ Long Bay
I think I might finish up the Vietnam trip stuff now and move on to other things, but I did want to ponder the Internet pirates of Hạ Long Bay beforehand. Those pirates were me.
I know when in a place as beautiful as Hạ Long Bay I should not worry about my work email. However, that isn’t possible. Even the idea of how far I’ll get behind in social media stuff and how long it will take me to clear out the backlog once I get access again after a gap gives me the chills. Thus, when I didn’t have Internet for twenty-four hours or more for an overnight cruise in Hạ Long Bay, I had issues.
Of course, our boat supposedly had WiFi. The crew mentioned it went in and out. My phone detected the access point and I connected to it, putting my phone back in my pocket a second later because we had to do something. That was the last anyone heard of our boat’s access point. Ever again.
We were on that boat for a good majority of the cruise. Though I say cruise, we actually cruised out to a spot and drifted there, taking a smaller boat to go to excursions. While we floated in that spot, we would come nearer to and further from other boats. The bay was full of other boats. One of those boats had WiFi.
The above is a picture of the boat I was scamming WiFi off of. I know that because they had a sign with the same name as the WiFi network. I’d run out on deck when I saw them come close, latch on to their WiFi, and get as much done as I could before we drifted away and the connection was lost.
Such is the peril of the high seas.
