Controversial article written by Eric Miyeni journalist in the Sowetan suggests that City Press editor Ferial Haffajee, whose newspaper investigated the finances of Julius Malema would have been necklaced (Necklacing involves pushing a rubber tyre soaked in petrol over a person's head and shoulders and setting it alight, leading to a slow death by burning.) for her efforts in a previous era. Miyeni is fired for writing the offending column. This action starts a debate on "freedom of speech" in South African newspapers and radio phone-in shows.
