Writing with Friends Part 1 of 2

Writer’s Retreats

description

Over ten years ago four friends decided to set aside time once a year for a private writer retreat. I was one of those four. We call it the Starfish Club, a name tied to a story about a boy throwing dying starfish into the sea regardless of the fact he couldn’t save them all. The gist of it is that we couldn’t help everyone, but we could help each other and we would. That one person can make all the difference sometimes.

We were pretty disciplined about the writing over the 4-5 days we’d be together. Each person would come with something we’d all read and review and be ready to discuss, and sometimes someone would bring an idea for a story and pitch it to the group for feedback. Each person got 2 rounds of concentrated time for themselves. And it was fun to have support from other writers who knew the challenges to writing, the industry, life and all the things in between.

We had schedules for work, for meals and for play. We became like sisters and those retreats became extremely valuable.

Starfish has evolved over time and we’ve added people here and there, some of dropped out, some have joined other groups. But, we still meet up and now we try for twice a year. This year starfish consisted of myself, Sheila English, Susan Edwards, Karen Rose and Kathie Firzlaff. My son Brian has joined us, Cheryl Wilson is an original Starfish and there’ve been others here and there. Everyone brings something different to the group, which is wonderful.

We all treat these get-togethers as work. We’re professionals and keep to our schedules and are very serious about helping each other. But, we are also friends so there may be some goofing off that goes on when we’re not working. Okay, maybe a lot. How wonderful it is to have great friends, wonderful stories and lots of laughter!

It's always fun to find like-minded friends who can be productive and silly all in the same day! LOL

Diana Stockton How fun! Sounds like a good way to cleanse the writing pallet and stir the creative juices. It just popped in my head...you said each brings a piece and everyone reads it, discusses it and mulls over other ideas. Do you ever have anyone to come that doesnt write? Someone just to read over those writtings and just listen? Maybe someone with a creative eye and an objective ear. I, myself, am not a writer but I know what I like. I know when words flow and blend into a story and I can feel when something works or not, in a literary sense. (Thats what I love, love, love about our Carpathians! When I am reading about them, I can feel, see, hear and breathe thru it like I'm there with them!) Lol Anyway. All that being said, I'd LOVE to be in that retreat listening and watching as professionals bloom. Have a wonderful time. Looking forward to the treasures from all the creativity......

Janice Sounds wonderful, as that way I could find out if my writing ideas might come across to readers, as too silly, or not.

Linda Parish What a great way to stay disciplined
About your writing and making it a positive
Experience at the same time. And all within
A well known support group.

Janice I agree. I often miss the creative writing group I used to be in, in college, even though they sometimes made fun of my writing, as being silly, and--I guess-- since I like good vampires and good shifters...that are the hero/heroines of the story, as not being scary enough, and "too" funny. Oh well, Blame it on the original Munsters, and Addams Family.

We only ever invite other writers because we talk about things other than the stories. We talk about marketing and the industry too. It's a way to connect with people who have your same challenges.

I think you should always write what you find interesting and fun no matter what others think.

It really is and we enjoy it very much!

Janice I, too, need and miss that discipline. I sometimes feel something is missing, whenever I have no time to write.

Janice Shadow Reaper, in May, and Dark Legacy, in September. Counting the months, and... trying....to be patient...maybe... I was so sure Dark Legacy would be out in March...oh, well. I'll keep on reading and writing.

Christine Once I finish writing Shadow Reaper, and I'm close, I will start on Dark Legacy!
