Gen Magnus Malan at the gates of heaven

General Magnus Malan has died. As South African defence minister in the 80s and 90s, he militarised the country to battle what he perceived a "total onslaught" on the apartheid regime. During his tenure, South Africa's military tried to suppress the liberation struggle against white rule. He crossed borders to combat communist-aligned parties ruling newly independent states. Malan and his "securocrats" in the police and the army deployed troops in South Africa's townships in order to repress anti-government riots in the 1980s. This lead to the declaration of a state of emergency in 1986. He used his troops on bloody raids against African National Congress based in neighbouring countries. In 1990, he was accused of involvement in deadly paramilitary operations in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal. Once apartheid ended, he and 19 other top military brass were charged in 1995 with murder and for creating hit squads to destabilise the country, and specifically with the 1987 massacre of 13 people in KwaZulu's Kwamakutha township. He always denied the charges. These were among the highest-profile attempts to prosecute apartheid-era atrocities.
